To think some people are considered prettier in other countries?

In other words, different countries have different beauty standards/preferences, and so some people might be considered more attractive in one country than another.

I was recently on holiday in Jo’burg with some friends (we’re in our 20s), and the amount of interest/attention my naturally blonde friend got was crazy. She said she’d never felt so pretty.

Equally, I went to Stockholm a few years ago and had never felt less attractive… got zero attention!

It’s a standing joke in our family that I am “hot in London “

I would say I look fairly unapproachable as I have zero interest in romantic relationships, but every time I go to London I get hit on left right and centre.

It really is bizarre. Still thankfully an invisible sixty year old on the south coast!!

I seem to be astonishingly beautiful everywhere. Any ideas where I could be considered not jaw-droppingly gorgeous?

Well its relative isn't it? So..my house?😊

SusanChurchouse · 02/06/2026 20:48

My red hair was definitely considered more attractive when I was in the US. And indeed a lot of places outside the UK.

AffIt · 02/06/2026 20:49

I have skin so white that it's practically pale blue, very dark hair (although the grey is taking over) and very light green / grey eyes with dark lashes and brows.

My colouring is quite unusual in the UK, but I had a particularly splendid time being cooed over in East / South East Asia.

I think most of the time it’s an interest because you look unusual rather then different approach to beauty. No offence 🙂

Entirely this! My dad used to live in Uganda and I wasn't any more pretty or exciting than the average bear - I just looked very different to most people. Novelty not attractiveness.

Greenknightsuccess · 02/06/2026 20:57

A friend and I traveled around India when we were 21 (more than 30 years ago). I was very slim at the time - my friend was a little chubby - and, unlike at home, she got a lot more attention than I did.

Not sure about pretty but as a Scotsman, Asia is always interesting especially Japan.

And also in the US, the number of women there who weirdly have a fetish for a Scotsman. I blame that programme Outlander.

I would go for Mel Gibson as William Wallace any day 🥰

But novelty is attractive. Attraction is mostly evolutionary. So novelty makes healthy children and avoids inbreeding. A good hip to waist ratio is both attractive and a good indicator of disease resistance. We tend to like youth so light hair is often 'attractive' because hair gets darker with age. And so on. And then there's location specific things.

When I was in rural Philippines- I made a child cry because he thought I was a ghost.

On the same trip, teenagers waved at me in the mall, because they thought I was Gwynth Paltrow. I am 5 foot but I did have long blonde hair!

I think there are some carribean countries where having curves and being overweight with it is considered more attractive than being slender.

I am tall and overweight and used to holiday in the Caribbean every year as had a friend living there. The friends I travelled with always said they felt invisible as everywhere we went I was chatted up and they were ignored.

Sure, but different cultures have different ideals of beauty and are sometimes attracted to types that look very different to the ‘home’ look. My mother, a white Irishwoman, adores the look of people with complexions she terms ‘sallow’ — by which she means ‘not pinkish, tans easily’ (comparatively rare in Ireland — common in the Mediterranean or South America). I’ve often had to point out to olive-skinned friends that ‘sallow’ when said by older Irish people is intended as a compliment, and not as a suggestion they look sickly or yellowish or Severus Snape-ish!

Conversely, I don’t get Paul Mescal as international sex symbol, even mediated via Connell Waldron. To me he’s an averagely pleasant-looking Irish guy of a widespread type. I went out with several versions of him in my teens. But I assume he appeals to people from other cultures where his look is less usual.

Incredibly ordinary looking men. Nothing wrong with that and some of them are good actors. But no better looking than average non celebrity men, yet are being given major heartthrob status.

In India, being chubby is a sign of prosperity (basically you can afford to eat well).

I remember watching an episode of Unreported World in Mauritania where they fed up young girls to make them put on weight and be more marriageable.

"The Channel 4 documentary series Unreported World investigated the extreme tradition of force-feeding young girls in Mauritania. In the episode titled "Forced to Be Fat," reporters uncovered how families force-feed girls as young as 5 up to 10,000 calories a day because larger sizes are traditionally seen as wealthy, beautiful, and highly marriageable"

i have logged on just to also say Mauritania! I’ve told my chap that if we ever split, I’m heading there with a suitcase of Gregg’s finest and will wait to be swept off my (fat) feet.

@Brenzaida
The 'sallow' comment from Irish women is familiar. We took our toddler ds to visit DHs irish relatives for the first time and two aunties separately said ds looked 'sallow'. Ds takes after one of my relatives and has got naturally olive skin unlike DH and me. I was slightly annoyed at the word sallow but realised later that it means something different in England and ireland.

Novelty just means being different or unusual in a place - sometimes it can be attractive, sometimes it is just interesting, it doesn't always equal attraction - why would it? Hip to waist ratios that are considered optimum vary from country to country - there is no 'one' ratio that is considered the most attractive. Hair doesn't get darker with age - unless you're talking about juvenilia - we all end up with white or silver hair don't we? Which tends to be lighter shades the last time I looked.

This is a known phenomenon. I've heard gay men talk about it/notice it. I've never noticed in my travels tbh, but I'm in my 50s and married.

In your 50s and married, you say? Oh dear, no wonder. They call us the invisible ones…

Aren’t you contrary? When you know what I mean!

@DragonScales yes ! In Latin America being fair with blue eyes makes you really stand out from the norm. Men - and women - randomly approach me to tell me they love my eyes ! It's always been very friendly. Same in Japan.
On the other hand, I would love the thick cascading hair, long eyelashes and deep dark pools-to-drown-in eyes....but I'll take the compliments 🤗🤭

KnitFastDieWarm · 03/06/2026 00:49

I’m a curvy pale redhead with big hips and thighs and I’be always been catnip to men from areas like West Africa and the Caribbean. I remember going to an Afrobeats night at uni about 20 years ago with my Nigerian flatmate (bang in the middle of the era of tans and size zero and kate moss) and being astonished and gratified to be showered with sincere compliments, offers of free drinks, and attempts to get my number all night - it was the first time in my life that I felt real love for my body and it was the start of a huge lifelong boost in my confidence.

Put me in, say, Sweden or Japan, and my sexiness level plummets 😁slim and elfin and blonde appears to be preferred!

Zoflorabore · 03/06/2026 00:59

I had this in Turkey. Chubby, very pale skin, black hair and bright blue eyes. It was weird but didn’t feel unsafe at all.

my dd at the time was 5 and she has naturally curly ringlets and green eyes and is very cute and people asked for a photo with her which I didn’t like at all.

the local kebab place my ds orders from has a few different drivers and I’m not entirely sure of his nationality but one of them is always paying me compliments that are really over the top!
