To be sick to death of noisy cars?

Dappy777 · 17/09/2025 16:59

Is it just me or are they getting worse? So many people now modify their cars so they make a hideous screeching noise when accelerating. Others modify the exhaust so it bangs and explodes. They are so loud they wake me up at night. I have even bought some noise cancelling earphones for when I'm trying to read – in my own house! There is a motorway 2 miles from here and I can hear them even with my windows closed.

If you work hard and love cars then great, save up and buy yourself a nice one. But it isn't fair to upset others. I was walking to the shops with a young child once when one of these idiots accelerated past us. The banging and exploding sound from the exhaust made her stop, put her hands over her ears and burst into tears. The police just do nothing. I have seen social media posts complaining about these cars from fifteen years ago, and they're worse than ever.

I’m sick of cars in general, roads are busy all day everyday, nobody seems to work,so much for saving the planet.🌎

AzurePanda · 19/09/2025 09:22

@cinquanta in the context of this thread, “modified” refers to modified to make a lot of noise. I couldn’t care less about any other modifications and I’d be surprised if anyone else did either. Deliberately making a vehicle louder is anti social behaviour,

I agree, but point needs to be made that “modified” doesn’t automatically mean noisy.

lizzyBennet08 · 19/09/2025 12:53

In my sister's estate, There was someone who went around to all the noisy modified cars and wedged a banana into the exhaust. Think it actually caused some damage, my sis said it was all anyone talked about for weeks . Due to the age profile of the estate there were quite a number of boy racers in thr same estate and the noise was pretty bad apparently.
Just shows you what people are driven to.

Dappy777 · 19/09/2025 13:14

It isn't just noisy cars. I'd like to see a major crackdown on all noise and anti-social behaviour. It ruins people's lives. In fact, it kills (I have known two people in my life driven to suicide attempts by violent, noisy, anti-social neighbours). The UK is densely populated. Our houses and flats are very small, and they are all jammed on top of one another. We need tougher laws than somewhere like Australia, where you have endless space.

I agree and those really noisy motorbikes too. Most cars & motorbikes aren’t noisy but some exhaust mufflers are removed etc. it needs to be banned and there should be fines for exceeding decibels / we need noise cameras . Causes so much stress

Harley’s with their uneven firing, so loud especially when they are next to you at lights 🙉 sometimes in pairs

Sundaymorningcalla · 19/09/2025 13:45

Hoppinggreen · 17/09/2025 17:29

Mine is very quiet but according to some it might burst into flames at any second while I am stranded somewhere as I can't travel any distance without charging frequently, which is impossible as there are no chargers anywhere

Cool story and totally irrelevant to the OP.

That’s criminal damage

I live in a very remote area. Fabulous roads for proper driving (at night when the dawdlers have gone) but you’ll almost certainly die waiting for an ambulance. Swings and roundabouts.

CalzoneOnLegs · 19/09/2025 13:50

@ISeeCheekyFuckers what is proper driving ?

Oreosareawful · 19/09/2025 14:04

When I was a young and immature teenager my boyfriend had an old mini that could shoot a flame out of the exhaust. He used to drive down the highstreet in the middle of the day and make it pop.
I found it bloody hillarious at the time, but now I do worry that he may have caused the odd heart attack.
Youngesters think of no-one but themselves unfortunately- I was one of them.

Incidently my husband purchased a new and loud exhaust for his car recently, only to take it back after a couple of days and have the original put back on because it was too loud and antisocial. It gave him a headache 😂
I took great pleasure in reminding him that he's not twenty anymore.

MondeoFan · 17/09/2025 22:47

Don’t all jump on me but I quite like it, whenever I hear a pop and bang I turn my head to look what car it is, but then I’m into cars. The sound to me reminds me that I’m alive. I’ll be sad once all the petrol cars have gone and all we will be left with are electric.

Part of the reason why they do it. That and sheer ignorance. The little shits that do it in my area don't do at their mammies.

JohnofWessex · 19/09/2025 14:50

The most powerful thing I ever drove was completely silent outside.

Fast Car Friday GIF by FIA World Rally Championship

Empty twisty road, good headlights, full tank, couple of roundabouts for drifting.

or this.

That would be ‘purring’ wouldn’t it 🐈‍⬛

No, an 8500shp steam turbine installation doesnt purr

No noise or vibration outside the machinery spaces

I won't - roll on the day when the air is clean

Best get rid of all the log burners as well then.

CalmShaker · 19/09/2025 19:58

Completely agree, it's actually one of my most hated things with modern life.
I live on busy road but it's not the traffic noise that bothers me, it's the noisy reved up exhausts

I'm amazed there are strict rules/laws with Ice Cream van music yet nothing is done with car exhaust. Surely they cannot pass an MOT with them like that?

17 MOTs passed and counting. The car is on its second exhaust, which was the closest match for the OEM.

MOTs don’t measure noise.

I didn't know that noise was not tested, I find that bizarre and a shame.

The 1955 SS Manxman

As used in the film Yentl

I was allowed a few goes on the engines in her last season

A car can fail an MOT for excessive noise.

CalzoneOnLegs · 19/09/2025 21:08

@JohnofWessex dreadful film, I expect ship was the least annoying thing in the whole film, but I’ve always found BS to be over theatrical and mouthy
my dad used to call it Lentil
