@LunaTheCat
Oh, I wish that he would!
Unfortunately he is powerful man,(well, he's just a guy who's been elected to be the POTUS and people are giving him that power).
So we are rolling out the red carpet for him big time because, putting it simply, we apparently need the USA on our side with regard to trade, as an ally in a troubled world, etc., etc.........
And he's a prime target for an assassination attempt.
So of course he needs to be kept secure.
I've just been reading the BBC news online, and getting more and more angry.
This, like his last state visit, is going to cost you and me millions.
Just take a look at the vehicles, (for use on land and in air), his entourage are flying over for him.
Not to mention his own security staff, medics, and other staff vital for his well-being. Who is paying for that, us or the USA?
Then there is the deployment of our own security staff, God knows how many police, military personnel, the Royal staff needed to accommodate his meetings with the King, Queen, Prince and Princess of Wales, etc.
And don't even go there regarding the lavish banquets and fine dining - which again, you and me will be paying for.
I'm angry and sickened and helpless - where does the money come from for this when we have people needing food banks?
Is it just me?

😪😪 very much 'trump, there's people that are dying'

What else can we do though, without the us, we are screwed imo

Vacuous question but was it rather bad etiquette for Melania to wear her hat at the ceremony inside St George’s chapel and inside the castle or is that old fashioned?

It’s not that long ago that women were expected to wear a hat in church, whereas men were expected to doff theirs.

Can't see a thread but please tell me if there is one

I love watching ceremonial stuff like this, as much as i dislike Trump

He's at Stansted now

Air Force One is HUGE!

https://news.sky.com/story/trump-state-visit-us-president-due-to-leave-for-uk-shortly-on-unprecedented-trip-13425640

I saw that he landed and then flew by Marine One (his own helicopter) to Windsor which then led me down a rabbit hole of working out how his helicopter got to the UK!

Turns out that in addition to bullet proof limousines, the President also usually travels with a helicopter which is unassembled (rotor blades taken off etc) and loaded onto a huge cargo plane along with the limousines. The cargo plane usually arrives before the President and is then ready to go once he arrives.

I am not a royalist and can’t stand Trump but I’m currently watching the BBC news channel footage of the banquet and finding it fascinating. The outfits! Kate looks stunning. Melania’s dress a surprising colour. Caroline Leavvit’s off the shoulder number looks a bit too black tie than white tie I reckon! Trying to work out who they’ve got Kate sat next to on the one side (poor woman has Trump yo deal with on the other).

I thought that women traditionally kept their hats on, though the armed forces have changed (circa 2017, I think) the rules such that both sexes remove headgear.

Always do speeches AFTER dinner!

Thing is, what can we "little people" do to object to the appalling, disgraceful cost of all this?
Write to our MP?
Vote at the next General Election?......for whom?
I bitterly resent having to pay for this, I really do😡

It's the state visit that should never have been offered in the first place. He had already had one during his first term in office and that was enough. Another wasn't needed.

Why are we welcoming such an arse?

Realpolitik.

The world’s in a mess. The West is in serious decline and highly unstable compared to a decade ago. Hostile superpowers like China and Russia are circling like predators. He’s the POTUS whether we like it or not.

That’s why.

I can’t bear to actually watch the visit- I feel cringey and dread to think how KC is feeling.

I did read the menu for the state banquet and it was an exquisite list of rarefied delicacies accompanied by fine wines. But apparently Trump only drinks Diet Coke and his favourite food is a burger, so that will be wasted on him. Perhaps Melania will enjoy it.

Lots of countries do state visits - not just the UK. It’s diplomacy, innit?

Hes going already 😭

All that money spent, wow
