Controversial but do people like netflix?

Reasons why would be greatly appreciated - thanks!

I lost netflix access when they stopped people sharing with friends/family for free so I'm not sure what it's like recently. I will probably get a short trial/pay for a month or 2 to binge watch the things I've missed at some point and at least by then I will know which shows were cancelled short to avoid disappointment. I agree it's better value to cycle through 1 at a time than have multiple subs.

I currently have Prime and Disney, I noticed Disney has swapped some content with ITVX and Dopesick and The Dropout was on iPlayer. I've also watched a fair few dramas on iPlayer/itvX/All4/5/U etc. It annoys me with the major streamers that your now expected to pay extra to avoid adverts although they sell it as if it's a discount rate.

rewardh · 16/09/2025 08:00

This is not controversial in the slightest. Some people will enjoy using the streaming service and be happy to pay for said services. Others won’t be fussed about using it so won’t pay. Why do you need to hear people’s reasons for such a mundane choice?

The best approach I’ve found is to cycle through them all - few months of Netflix. Few months of Disney. And so on.

In our house Netflix is the gateway to Paw Patrol, but things may be different for you if you don’t have preschoolers!

This! These subscriptions make a lot of money from people who sign up and then just keep it rolling each month without really using it. I cycle them through them each month too according to whatever I want to watch. I sign up but then cancel straight away (do I don’t forget) and then when the month is over, move to Paramount or Disney or whatever.

I rarely watch it, but it is useful to have for the kids during the long summer vacation and over the Xmas one. We use it for language practice as you can set the audio to what you like.

Bjorkdidit · 16/09/2025 08:17

It's a waste of money if you pay for it and never watch it.

But if you do watch it, it's cheap entertainment. Like several PPs, we only ever have one at a time and swap to a new one when we get bored of whichever one we're paying for.

Much better than Sky/Virgin when you're tied to a contract for a year or two, although it's that long since I've had a TV contract, there might be new ways of having it these days.

Iocainepowder · 16/09/2025 08:22

We enjoy netflix, always something to watch. It has stuff the kids like, like peppa, minions etc.

We are finding ourselves watching less and less on normal tv.

It was Disney+ we’ve cancelled for a bit as my 4 year old just isn’t interested.

PumpkinSeasonOctober · 16/09/2025 08:22

It’s £5.99. Hardly breaking the bank.

Toomanywaterbottles · 16/09/2025 08:25

We have it and watch regularly. Always something good to watch. And it’s cheap. Never tried Sky/Disney/Prime. Netflix and normal TV is more than adequate.

Dorb · 16/09/2025 08:26

Absolute dross on Netflix. Full of nothing but Netflix productions, which once you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all and very old movies that were never really blockbusters. There is only rarely something that appeals to me. On the plus side, it’s incredibly cheap for a month with adverts.

BertieBotts · 16/09/2025 08:45

Anything is a waste of money if you don't use it Grin

Probably people who pay for it so use it

I have Netflix and mine has loads of stuff that isn't made by them, I know obviously we all have different tastes but I think theres a pretty good range, for me quite a lot of drama series I didn't see when they were first on terrestrial TV

blobby10 · 16/09/2025 09:10

I wouldn't pay for it myself but my son has shared his subscription with me - sometimes I find a gem to watch but they don't have as many good films as they used to. Same with Amazon - they have definitely increased the number of films you have to pay for now! More often than not, I turn the TV off and read a book Grin

mondaytosunday · 16/09/2025 09:16

Netflix is the service we watch most. Some great series on it - currently watching Bloodline and Squid Game. Money Heist was worth the annual subscription fee on its own!

winterborn · 16/09/2025 09:31

Ive never had nextflix my sister did and it was crap everything i looked for wasn't on there.
Then i discovered westream.
Its free and i can watch anything.
Sister gave up with nextflix aswell.

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 16/09/2025 09:33

I subscribed last Christmas to watch all the Harry Potter films as I had never seen them, but after that I found nothing of interest to me so I cancelled my subscription. I'm not a big tv watcher anyway though. I prefer to read.

It's not cheap if you think it's all crap.

ComfortFoodCafe · 16/09/2025 09:37

It used to be great but past 5 years or so you have to wait 2-3 years for the next season of a show to come out. Netflix is killing itself.

ObtuseMoose · 16/09/2025 09:37

greengreyblue · 16/09/2025 06:46

I find it frustrating when I remember an old film I want to watch and you have to pay for it but quite a new release is included. Don’t watch it very often tbh and could go without it.

Netflix don't charge to watch movies, everything is included in the subscription fee.

There's loads of stuff to watch, the Korean content is worth the subscription in itself.

Bedheadbeachbum · 16/09/2025 09:38

It's good value if you are still watching a particular TV show. If we weren't working our way through a series we'd cancel, sometimes we get it if there are a couple of films we want to see on there.

I don't think it's compulsory at all, I prefer to have TV licence and free YouTube and no extra subscription.

Avantiagain · 16/09/2025 09:44

Ds has it in his supported living house. Lots for him to watch and it is cheaper than a TV licence.

Purplecatshopaholic · 16/09/2025 09:47

I ditched it about 6 months ago as there was nothing on it I wanted to watch. If I missed it I would get it again, but I never have (I don’t watch much tv anyway).

blobby10 · 17/09/2025 13:54

I found a film to watch on Netfllix!!! The Wrong Paris - started watching last night - it has horses and scenery and a lead actor who can actually ride as well as look very nice doing so. the script is incredibly cheesy and the acting is of a brilliant standard but I'm watching the rest tonight, just for the horses Wink

That keeps popping up as recommended for me. I've been resisting. But will give it a go.

Lead actors who can actually ride is reason enough tbh!

blobby10 · 17/09/2025 15:43

@JustStopItNorasaurus its cheesy as hell so far but the lead male is very charming to look at and seems to spend a lot of time in short sleeves or open shirt and he has clearly been to the gym! Just hoping for more horses..........!!Grin

I prefer Netflix to Disney but I find I’ve watched everything I want to on Netflix, then bounce to Disney for a classic film or Bob’s Burgers episodes. Netflix seriously need new content at the moment. The quality has dipped recently.

Agree with this Netflix definitely needs to update its content I am going to not bother renewing mine
