Gallbladder is out….wtf can I eat

CoconutSky · 15/09/2025 16:26

I had my gallbladder removed on Friday. Hospital provided some toast after surgery.
Had some mild nausea and dry heaving early hours of Saturday morning as the anaesthetic and fentanyl wore off

Also had the dreaded diarrhoea this morning but I haven’t eaten since my surgery. I don’t know what to eat.

Can I have margarine on toast? A biscuit?
I went extremely low fat in May due to the gallstones and I am now petrified to eat anything.

Any post op ideas?

Rich tea biscuits are a lot lower fat than other types.

Have they not given you any dietary advice when you were discharged?

CoconutSky · 15/09/2025 16:28

Nope! Just that I can eat normally but I’m too much of a shitbag!

I just ate as normal from the get go. Nobody told me not too. If I eat sour cream I get punished other than that my life has returned to absolutely normal. My gallbladder was full of gallstones so it had been doing absolutely nothing for quite some time.

mamagogo1 · 15/09/2025 16:33

You can eat normally but avoid really fatty foods and best to eat several smaller portions rather than 3 bigger meals. They say not to go overboard with fibre either, just a normal mixed diet with leaner protein

BeautifulSongsofLove · 15/09/2025 16:36

The only dietary advice is the smaller means might be helpful

HeartbrokenCatMum · 15/09/2025 16:37

My mum had to avoid oily or fatty foods otherwise she had the instant runs

steff13 · 15/09/2025 16:38

I just ate normally. The first few days I think I ate lighter than I normally would have, because I was a little nauseous.

TATT2 · 15/09/2025 16:39

I just ate normally with no issues.

justasking111 · 15/09/2025 16:41

Mcvities digestive biscuits and cups of tea. I was off my food with painkillers anyway. Stay low fat . I did graduate to soups and toast. I remember being very tired.

familyissues12345 · 15/09/2025 16:42

I just ate what I fancied, which wasn’t much. Soup and toast was about all I could stomach for the first few days, mainly because I’d been on such a strict diet in the run up my body was used to starvation!

Now 2.5 years on and the only thing I can’t stand is avocado. I suffer a bit if I eat greasy food etc, but I just have to be aware of it

socks1107 · 15/09/2025 16:45

I had mine out 18 years ago and just ate normally and always have

CoconutSky · 15/09/2025 16:51

I’ve not actually had any painkillers. I’m mostly up and mobile now just a few residual gas pains in my shoulders

Im absolutely starving but scared to eat anything
@familyissues12345 this is where I’m at with it! I’ve been that limited I don’t bloody know what I like anyway

Mrspatmoresapprentice · 15/09/2025 16:54

I had mine out more than 20 years ago, I can eat anything. Except Fish and Chips because that goes straight through me! I never had a particularly high fat diet anyway so I didn’t change anything.

YourLemonTiger · 15/09/2025 16:54

I had my gall bladder removed 35 years ago and it's never crossed my mind to eat any special sort of diet and I feel fine.
I developed gall stones in my late teens as a side effect of taking the pill which was quite rubbish.

TheBewleySisters · 15/09/2025 16:55

I had small amounts of soup, dry toast, crackers, and moved on to chicken noodle soup and toast with a smear of spread.

TulipTuesday · 15/09/2025 16:55

I asked for advice on what to eat when I left hospital after my op assuming I’d need to be careful for a bit - I’d also had an ERCP to remove stones in my bile duct.

The doctor just said ‘eat what you want, that’s why we’ve taken it out for you!’

I had to eat smaller meals for a bit as my stomach had shrunk and I did feel a bit sick if I ate too much, but after about 5 days I was back eating everything I couldn’t before.

TheBewleySisters · 15/09/2025 16:56

I should have added, one year on, and I eat pretty normally, but for me I avoid cheese and mayo.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 15/09/2025 16:57

Eat whatever you like. Probably best to avoid cream, cheese, deep fried stuff, nuts etc for a minute, but otherwise have something small and see how you feel.

What do you actually fancy eating? Fruit? Biscuits? Toast? Sandwich? Soup?

Just take it easy, eat little and often, and see how you go.

CoconutSky · 15/09/2025 16:58

I would be happy with toast but I hate it dry and I love a biscuit

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 15/09/2025 16:58

Oh no OP, no practical advice but I hope you can get some help. Both my Step Gran and Step Mum had this surgery (at different times) and they both became seriously underweight due to being too anxious to eat properly. Does your GP offer dietary advice and support maybe? It’s taken years for my Step Mum to get back to normal weight again.

Autumnflowers2 · 15/09/2025 17:01

I had mine out 30 years ago
Back then no advice was given as to what I could or couldn't eat
I just went back to what I fancied..I think toast and bland food for the first few days ..but nothing much changed for me

TulipTuesday · 15/09/2025 17:02

There’d be no harm in you having a bit of toast with butter. Then have a biscuit or two.

Just eat mindfully so you give your stomach time to catch up and don’t over eat.

It'll only be a matter of days before you’re eating normally again.

Catsfavouritemum · 15/09/2025 17:06

I had mine out 15 years ago and my consultant said I could eat normally again so just eat whatever you feel like.

N0tfinished · 15/09/2025 17:08

I eat completely normally. Never had any bad reactions

Florenceandthemaniac · 15/09/2025 17:09

Stay low fat if you can! I had mine out and dropped all the good habits I had before surgery.

Eating fatty foods had no negative impact at all on me, so I was back on the butter, biscuits and chocolate right away!
