To wish this about toilets when your out?

Fed up of toilets stinking when your out.
Everywhere like library toilets, airport toilets, shop toilets. public toilets, station toilets it absolutely stinks.

Sometimes it makes you gag.
Why aren't there any air freshners in toilets that intermitentely pump out a nice fragrance.

Also it could be triggered when people use the toilet.
After all we usually open the window and spray round when using the toilet when we are at home.
Shouldn't it be the same when you use the toilet out?
🙄😪

I’ve been sprayed directly in the eyes by an automatic freshener in a pub loo… so that’s one reason why. But yes, it would be nice for them to be cleaner

spoonbillstretford · 17/09/2025 04:09

They need to be cleaned very frequently, that's usually the issue. It's very obvious which are cleaned enough and which aren't.

chuzzlewitthechipmunk · 17/09/2025 05:23

Just come back from Germany where the toilet seat at rhe bigger motorway services was cleaned automatically between uses - it swivelled round under a cleaner.mind you it did cost me €1.

toilets are increasingly disgusting and I hate the mixed ones.

Women’s toilets are fine. I almost went into the men’s recently at a train station by mistake, and even from the doorway, that was a whole other level of stink. That’s how I knew I’d gone wrong. Once you’ve smelled that, women’s loos are like a florists!

I haven’t really noticed public toilets smelling bad - that’ would be unusual.

I am consistently amazed by the number of people who just wee all over the seat then leave it there.

Hover if you must, but clear up after yourself!

Same in hospital. When I go for maternity appointments (every day at the moment) the number of women who have

  1. Left wee on the seat and not wiped it

2.not flushed the toilet.

3.continued to use a not flushed toilet so it builds up and up.

  1. Put hand towels down toilet.

5.Put the cardboard wee pots down toilet. (Clearly marked yellow bin with posters up everywhere)

6.leave without washing hands.

It's disgusting

I don’t want air fresheners as they make me cough and sneeze. I tend to be allergic to things like that, whether it’s due to mild hayfever or what?

We’ve just been to Malaysia. The average salary for the population is lower than it is here.

We went around the countryside, not just the cities. We’d often find public toilets, which charged 10 - 20p - with an attendant, at tourist attractions. As well as toilet paper, every toilet had a mini shower for cleaning oneself (and presumably the toilet seat), as is normal in a Muslim country. Admittedly some were the hole in the ground type, but there were always several Western type toilets too, with a sign not to squat on them!

I never saw a ladies toilet in the disgusting state, as I’ve seen some in the UK! I would prefer to pay a nominal amount and have better provision of public toilets here, with an attendant to keep them clean!

🤔 you didn’t read my previous line where I said I always wipe a loo seat?
Is it really worth your while making a reply, if you can only b bothered to read 1 line of someone’s text? Oh whoops i’ve gone over 1 line here…

But wipe it with what? Loo paper? Because it might look better but if you're worried about germs that won't help and the pp is right..you're far more likely to transfer germs to your face from your hands than the back of your thighs. Your hands surely would be better off as far away from the seat as possible?

Cantseetreesforthewood · 17/09/2025 06:50

What we need is Joe public who is capable of pissing in the loo, rather than on the floor, and enough public funds that the place can be properly cleaned frequently.

We also need public toilets designed to have decent ventilation that is always operating.

What we don't need is more stinky stuff pumped out to hide the stink. It just needs cleaning and fresh air.

loo paper of course,(but also permanently carry moist wipes) have u never noticed sweat marks left by previous user🤔.
Oddly…I always wash my hands after using loo & touching door furniture used by previous ‘clients’,so any germs won’t be transferred. And i also manage to breath, keep my shoulders back, exercise pelvic floor, etc, etc,. Cant believe so much detail needs to be spelt out🤨.

People are gross though. I went through the airport recently and it was disgusting how people (women) left some toilets cubicles- loo roll everywhere, piss on the seat, poo etc, utterly gross.

I'm mystified as to why so many people find it necessary to leave loads of bog roll lying on the floor of the cubicles in my local Tesco. I very rarely see this anywhere else, but in Tesco there's paper all over the floor more often than not.

And it's a no to air fresheners from me. Many of them smell so vile that I'd prefer the smell of shit, and some trigger my migraines. We don't have them at work, and people open the window to let the smell out when they go for a dump.

One big issue is fire doors which have to be kept shut, it means less air circulation, windows are also either small and cannot be opened far or no existent.

Both of these are obviously put in place by health and safety regulations.

\Fire doors do not have to be closed all the time, even 30+ years ago the hospital I worked in had fire doors on magnets so they were open until a fire alarm went off and the magnets switched off.

I wish toilet brushes were provided in more public toilets to assist people in cleaning up after themselves. Although I’ve seen skid marks left in toilets where there were brushes. Disgusting. No excuse not to use the brush where one is provided.

Chemical fragrances are not the solution, and will make thise places unusable for lots of people with sensitivities to those chemicals. More investment in cleaning and good ventilation, proper maintenance to ensure the loos flush properly every time, and why on earth are there so many antisocial people who spray their effluent around the cubicle rather than getting it all into the bowl and ensuring that the flush worked before they leave the cubicle?

I think some people just flush with the lid down (rightly so) and just leave without checking that it has flushed properly.

Exactly this, enough people tend to think someone else is paid to clean up after them and have no respect for the others using the facilities anyway so we have a mess left everywhere that's always someone else's problem.

PollyBell · 17/09/2025 10:19

So we would have to have toilet smells mixed in with artificial fragrance smells, maybe if people weren't so revolving it would be less of a problem

But I hate air fresheners more they do nothing but put chemicals in the air
