Bleeding inbetween periods, is it normal???

Hey! Just hoping someone can help.

ive had some bleeding in between my period. My last period was 2 weeks ago and had completely finished. I randomly noticed some blood last night but it was only a small amount. When I woke up there was a decent amount, and I’ve used a tampon today and again there’s a decent amount- not a full period, but not slight spotting either. I remember last month I had some light spotting in between periods too but not as much as this

I’m 27, not sexually active so it’s 100% not pregnancy or a STI. I’ve never had bleeding in between my period before so this is totally new to me. Google brings up all the scary possibilities but given my age and the fact I’m not sexually active, does that make it less likely to be anything bad? I haven’t been for my smear test because honestly I was too embarrassed (sounds silly I know), and ive had the HPV cervical cancer shot at school so figured I was fine

Health wise I’m otherwise fine now. I’ve not had any pain etc but I don’t usually get any pain with my periods, I’ve never suffered with heavy periods or cramps. I’ve had issues recently with discomfort in my stomach and back but it’s just been trapped wind. I also had a lump on my sternoclavical joint which started a few months ago and they thought it was a swollen lymph node- I never got told what it was but the x ray was clear and they said it wasn’t a lymph node and whatever it is doesn’t need treatment. I had a few scans/tests on my chest a few weeks ago and they said I had bilateral pleural effusions but no treatment needed. Otherwise I’m fine 👍🏼

so yeah, is bleeding between periods nothing to worry about at my age? I don’t want to go to the doctor if it’s nothing to worry about

I would see the doctor. It is a red flag even at your age. Probably nothing but best to get it checked out.

KneeQuestion · 15/09/2025 14:37

Absolutely go to the doctor.

Hi, hope you’re doing okay, I know this can be really stressful when all kinds goes through your mind.
I have been there so I completely understand you looking for some assurance.
this happened to me throughout pregnancy and continued thereafter randomly a year after I know you haven’t mentioned children but you his also occurred on other occasions, it turned out I had a cervical ectropion which can be caused by pregnancy, contraception can also cause this amongst other harmless things.
I went to the dr to be checked out and when this happened in later years I was went back to the nurse and asked to be seen and I was then referred to gyno who were really helpful. I think always for peace of mind get reviewed by a professional, don’t google we aren’t equipped to handle the information it throws at us it often takes us to the worst outcome as oppose to all the more likely ones.
its never nice to be looked at down there but they don’t care they’ve seen it all xx

AhBiscuits · 15/09/2025 14:41

It isn't normal for you so should definitely be investigated.

DenDenDenise · 15/09/2025 15:13

Please make an appointment OP - It could be something which needs further investigation. Anything when you are loosing blood without explanation needs to be taken seriously.

i used to often bleed mid cycle when i ovulated. having said that, still go and see your gp to get it checked out

Thank you so much! (And everyone else too)

it’s that way I didn’t want to waste their time if it’s something which is usually normal/fine, it’s just something I’ve never had before so I was unsure. I’ve checked again and it’s definitely still bleeding, not enough that it’s like a normal period but I definitely need to use a tampon. It’s a mix of discharge and blood. Really wish I’d gone for a smear test now but I figured I didn’t need to go through the embarrassment since I wasn’t sexually active and have had all the shots x

you’re very welcome I know how you’ll be questioning everything but you can’t change that now all you can do is deal with the issue now. They’d never think you were wasting their time that’s what they are there for. Like a poster said if it’s not normal for you it’s not normal. Book to be checked by the nurse, they will make you feel completely at ease. You can’t second guess what’s happening it can be all sorts of simple and minor issues but don’t sit on it book in xx

Hi just posting a quick update! I haven’t been able to get a gp appointment yet unfortunately, just trying everyday at 8.30 but so far been unsuccessful.

It’s still happening- not a full period but absolutely enough to need a tampon. I don’t know if that’s classed as spotting or just an extra period, and if it’s a bad or good sign?

sorry, lots of questions, hopefully I’ll get a gp appointment soon.

You're right to go to the doctor if this isn't normal for you, but lots of women get a random bleed between periods at some point in their lives and loads of things can cause it, the vast majority of which are nothing to worry about at all - so try not to panic while you're waiting for your GP appointment. The chances are it's nothing - lots of things can cause a little fluctuation in hormones or whatever and the majority of them are nothing sinister. Hope you get seen by your doctor soon but try not to worry in the meantime.

Hi OP. When you are trying every day to get an appointment are you mentioning why?

Yeah, annoyingly it’s just a case of phone at 8.30 and hope for the best. I called quite literally on the dot but unfortunately was still position 60-something in the queue and no appointments left. I’ll try again tomorrow and hopefully get something x

Definitely see your GP, if you can push for a pelvic and transvaginal ultrasound to
check polyps or fibroids. Hopefully you can see them soon.
