To skip work event

34 weeks pregnant, I’m supposed to be on a work trip tomorrow to an all company event. There are engineering works on my train route so my usual 1 hour journey will take 2.5 hours meaning I need to leave at 6am and travel on a packed train. I’ve got a stinking cold, this is actually my third one in as many weeks and I’m just exhausted from working full time, parenting a toddler and now the travel. WIBU to not go? It’s basically just a whole company get together to see 2026 plans presented for which I will be on maternity leave anyway!

nope..

do what's best for you, and 2.5 hour travel isnt good

voucherwowcher · 15/09/2025 09:18

I would absolutely not being going to this. I had something similar when I was 34w pregnant and I didn’t go

MellowPinkDeer · 15/09/2025 09:18

Could you drive instead?

Swiftie1878 · 15/09/2025 09:20

Don’t just skip. Tell them you aren’t going, and tell them your reasons. Be a grown-up about it. They’ll appreciate it.
Enjoy a day of rest! x

Yes when I say skip I do mean tell them, I wouldn’t just not turn up!

Yes - tell them you're not feeling well enough to travel. Perhaps ask if someone can debrief you on the main 'take aways' from the event afterwards, if you want to show keenness!

TalulahJP · 15/09/2025 09:33

I would tell them all of what youve told us.

If pushed, is there an option to arrive later so you don’t need to leave at the crack of dawn? ie you leave at 8am and get there in time for the main noon presentation or something?

Feels like there is no point in you being there for stuff that won’t affect you anyway.

I’d also point out that you may not get a seat on the train so it’s not practical as you cannot stand for 2.5hours. Potentially both directions.

It’s just too much when you’re so far along.

MrsMoastyToasty · 15/09/2025 09:33

Show willing by either joining by teams or ask them to record the meeting.
It's quite feasible to have a baby born at 34 weeks so I wouldn't travel too far from my local maternity services.

GnomeDePlume · 15/09/2025 09:37

Privately or even not so privately they may be glad if you don't go.

It’s actually only on for the morning so I would be travelling another 2.5 hours back early afternoon!
