To ask for your stories that diarrhea for weeks can clear up?! Anyone?!

DH got it first and then two of the kids. I don’t usually have tummy issues, and was super busy so took Imodium just the once. They are all ok although it lasted two weeks in DH and my youngest.

I have now had diarrhea on and off for five weeks. I have tried gluten free, low fodmap, probiotics, not eating. Went to GP after three weeks who was totally non plussed even though I’m now 50.
finally handed in a stool sample last week but haven’t heard back and understand it’s often negative for infections

  • I can be nearly ok for a day and then it flares
  • I did lose my appetite at the start and lost weight but am sometimes hungry now
  • at its worst, the cramp wake me at night and I spend an hour on the loo
  • it is slightly improving but I am so fed up.
  • higher fibre makes it worst so eating meat and yogurt and banana. Dairy don’t seem to make it worse.
  • coffee and onions are real triggers
  • it smells pretty unpleasant

I will go back to the GP and beg for help but they are useless

has anyone had diarrhea this long and it has just gone?! Anything else I can try powers of MN?!

The original infection could have triggered ibs, thats what happened to me

My mum got incredibly nasty food poisoning with horrible diarrhoea. It lasted around 4 months before she was back to normal.

I had this after food poisoning. After four weeks spoke to GP who put me on mebeverine. Wonderful stuff settled me right down.

Now Im on codamol for pain that's firmed everything up.

I think buscopan is another fix.

Throwitawayagain · 14/09/2025 22:01

Yes. Took me about 6 weeks after picking something up in North Africa.

Some years ago I started with diarrhoea out of the blue.
It lasted 10 weeks!
Even weak squash went right through me.
For the first 5 weeks I had zero appetite, but was feeling ill from hunger. I could only stomach plain pasta.
The GP sent me a bowel cancer kit, which came back clear.
I was in so much pain with stomach cramps that after 2 calls to 111 who advised me to drink water and dehydration powders that I turned up at a&e barely able to stand.
I was admitted to hospital as I was dehydrated.
I was still eating nothing, yet going to the loo up to 5 times a day and (sorry tmi) producing just brown water.
After 2 days in hospital they sent me home with antibiotics which did nothing.
My partner was making me tiny meals of alsorts of foods, but I could only manage a mouthful before I felt sick.
Around the 10 week mark I was suddenly craving salt and vinegar Discos. No idea why as ive never liked them.
However I could keep them down and was eating a pack a day, nothing else.
One morning I woke up and started eating normally again, and the diarrhoea stopped.
It never returned. The almost 3 stone I lost during that time did unfortunately return though Hmm

Yes - me. I clearly picked something up on hols and all bloods and stools came back normal. The holiday was May half term and I reckon im 80% better with the occasional nasty surprise. I was still pretty bad in August and that was about 2 and a half months after. GPS were useless until I got really annoyed and they put me on a micro dose of a mild AD which has a side effect of helping IBS symptoms. I can’t really drink coffee in the same way even now! I did lose a stone though and have kept it mainly off which was a nice side effect. My sympathies to you

Take a probiotic for your gut and go lactose free for a while.

Papergirl1968 · 14/09/2025 22:59

I had awful diarrhoea last summer for three weeks. It would stop for a day or two then start again. Yep, brown water as I was eating so little.
GP put it down to viral gastroenteritis, and suggested that it wasn’t a good idea to take Imodium or similar as you’re best to let whatever nasty bugs are causing it to pass through.
There was talk of me having to go into hospital to be rehydrated via a drip but didn’t happen in the end. A friend who had it more recently however did end up in hospital.
It is horrible. I would try to stick to small but regular snacks of very plain food, like toast or maybe rich tea or digestive biscuits.

A friend and partner picked up something in Egypt the first time it lasted a fortnight. She had a miscarriage. Then it went but kept returning for both of them. The GP eventually told them to fast for 48 hours, water only. That fixed both of them.

Has your dr ruled out H.Pylori? I lost my appetite, diarrhoea, nausea, weight loss, anxiety etc.
It's a simple breath test to rule it out just in case so definitely worth a try. :)

Thank you for giving me some hope! My tummy feels red raw. I will remain hopeful and in a way hope the tests does show something

Get them to test for giardiasis. You will probably have foul smelling burps with that though.

Coucillj · Yesterday 13:27

Beethoven did it clear up as this me now

justasking111 · Yesterday 13:30

@BeethovenNinth nudge

Open a bottle of full sugar coke
Let it go flat.
Drink it.
500ml should do the trick

I got a bug on holiday once, but when the bug cleared up the diarrhoea didn't and I could dharely leave the apartment. I tried immodium, didn't work. Someone sugges flat full sugar coke and it was the only think that worked! I could eventually go swimming!
Google it, it's a thing.

I would see GP for feacal tests since the whole family has it.

You could have a case of a water bourne infection especially if you have water tanks in the attic that then feed your cold water taps upstairs because the home set up is prone to giardiasis and others.
