To ditch the washer dryer.....

Having a vent (Pardon the pun) as I've had enough of the bloody thing!
It washes clothes fine....then I hang them up to dry either outside or on airers.
Once dry they are either very dry & stiff (if they've been outside) or still abit damp on the airers (as its harder to get them completely dry on there at the lower levels, even spread out) So the idea is that the tumble dryer 'finishes them off'

However this is where the problems start! You can set the timer or use a pre- program option. The timer doesn't work as after 30-45 mins they're still wet and I then have to remember to notice when it stops and re-set it before they sit and smell, and even then its hard to know how long to keep setting it for.

So I tend to use the pre-set programmes.
However to get things properly dry or soft (especially towels) can take 2-3 hours.Often i have to override it and turn it off to stop it, as they will be dry but it just goes on and on.
And sometimes (like today) it can be on for that long and they STILL come out damp. I try not to put too much in but the dark clothes are quite heavy by default.....joggers, leggings etc.

I'm getting really sick of it and feel like maybe we just need to go back to the dryer in the garage and washing machine indoors idea.Annoyingly we sold the washing machine, the old dryer (which dried them completely after airing in around 20 minutes) was getting on abit so would have been replacing that anyway.

Was doubtful about the washer dryer from the off as it also makes a horrible banging noise constantly as it pulls water through the pipes.
Its a Hotpoint NDB8635WUK model. It had some bad reviews and wish I had listened!

Does anyone else have similar issues with a WD?
Is it me doing something avoidable or is the only option forking out for a new dryer and using the washer as just that 🥺🤦‍♀️

Never had any success getting clothes dry with a combined washer drier.
we have a condensing drier, it’s only two years old and has all the eco credentials which means it’s totally shit at drying too, and I hate the bloody thing, it does dry eventually but it has to be on the extra dry program followed by another hour on warm air setting to dry anything heavier than a threadbare tea towel!

Mixingitup · 14/09/2025 20:14

I've just got a dryer after my washer dryer stopped drying...I'll never go back, I can dry a load in no time and it's ACTUALLY dry.

Washer-dryers have a smaller drum than a drier and hence are rubbish at getting things dry.

get rid of it.

Hercisback1 · 14/09/2025 20:18

Washer and driers are the worst of all worlds. I'd rather have just a washer and dry outside/on airers with a dehumidifier.

Can highly recommend a heat pump dryer! We bought one last year (a cheaper Hi-Sense one), it was a very spendy item for us but it dries clothes pretty quickly and doesn't use much energy. Every experience I've ever had of washer dryers is that they are dog poop

Shitmonger · 14/09/2025 20:27

If you have the option to put it in a garage then you need a vented dryer. Sheets straight from the washer are lovely and dry in 10-15 minutes. Saves ridiculous amounts of time. It would probably be quite easy to set up in a garage.

Failing that a heat pump dryer but those take longer and you have to empty the water out which is a pain imo.

BamberGirl · 14/09/2025 21:35

I have one, I can override the pre programs though by repeatedly pressing one of the buttons, so it toggles through A1, A2 and then it goes to minutes…I can then just choose 30 mins. I then dry for 30 mins before putting on line to soften towels etc, works a treat and is quick.

BertieBotts · 14/09/2025 21:38

No experience with a washer dryer, though the taking it in out in out (shake it all about) sounds like a right faff.

But if you're putting the dryer in an unheated garage, DO NOT get a heat pump one. They only work properly at ambient temperatures over about 10-15C - they are not suitable for unheated areas.

Get a cheap vented dryer or a condenser.

Love my heat pump dryer, but they need to be indoors.

What kind do you have? Just started to think about getting one but I’d like it to work!

From the manual for your machine

Is this the same model as mine? As it sounds like it with the A1- A4 drying then time settings! If so it's interesting that yours does it so fast....because it pumps water on to it to dry it (wierd concept!) 30 mins on mine just seems to make things wetter than when they go in! (As I'm using it to soften and dry slightly damp clothes, not soaking wet ones)

Thanks 👍 I do have this and usually use the cupboard dry setting which i thought was the best one for getting them as dry as possible

Have you tried adding dryer balls? I rarely use the dryer function in mine but I got those recently and have used it twice since and I'm sure it cut drying time by a fair bit so I'm definitely going to keep using them. I mainly plug in a dehumidifier next to my drying rack though.

Confusedmumofteen · 14/09/2025 23:00

We have this one. Took a while to figure out but if you make sure that you've got it on the right setting (cotton/synthetic etc) when selecting Dry Only it makes a real difference.
I dry 4 bath sheets and a bath mat on cotton DRY ONLY and it does take around 4.5 hours but not overly expensive to run.

nellietheellie75 · 14/09/2025 23:01

I have a 9kg condenser dryer and it dries a full load in under an hour. If I half fill it's done within 30 minutes

😮

Which brand/model please?

My useless one doesn't even finish off line dry stuff in half an hour and still feels damp when cooled.

The AEG ones have good reviews and also the cheaper Beko Pro BM3T series.
