Is it acceptable, or is it jingoistic?
Not sure

I love it singing and dancing in my nightie. I have to whole season recorded. Oh and Im not English or English Resident. Loved Bill Bailey and Queen.

claracluck1978 · 13/09/2025 22:24

I love it - especially tonight - showing the right sort of pride in our flags and anthems. London looks better tonight draped in Union Flags than it did this afternoon in Whitehall.

ExtraOnions · 13/09/2025 22:25

It’s ok to enjoy it … great music … it’s also ok to also think Empire & Imperialism were awful for most people. I take heart in all the different flags being waved, in peace - reminds me most people in this country are decent people, who happily rub along with each other.

I've never watched it. I've also never heard the word jingoistic before. Just had to Google it. Learnt a new word!

WingBingo · 13/09/2025 22:25

I’m rather enjoying it.

Newrumpus · 13/09/2025 22:32

What a bizarre question.

EwwSprouts · 13/09/2025 22:33

I'm enjoying it for what it is - music across the ages performed at the highest level. Sorry no names but female conductor. Top female trumpeter solo. Bohemian Rhapsody. Bill Bailey. Hardly jingoistic given the breadth of nationalities of composers.

BMW6 · 13/09/2025 22:36

It's wonderfully Kitch! Nothing beats it when they belt out Rule Britannia and Jerusalem!!

Bo Rhap was a genius touch, Freddie would have LOVED it!

I expect loads of people will sneer and claim its "jingoistic" - they do every year. 🙄

AtomicBlondeRose · 13/09/2025 22:38

There’s far more EU flags than Union flags and basically no St George’s Crosses at all, which is very interesting considering the demographic.

QueenOfTheHighCs · 13/09/2025 22:39

It was great- lots of fabulous female artists. Louise Alder absolutely smashing it, and a fun arrangement of Bohemian Rhapsody. I don't love all the flag waving, but did love Louise's amazing red white and blue dress for Rule Britannia (and her outstanding vocal embellishments!).

TessoftheBurgervan · 13/09/2025 22:41

Totally acceptable.

suburburban · 13/09/2025 22:47

yes I enjoyed it

MrsMoastyToasty · 13/09/2025 22:47

I sang (questionable) along to Jerusalem. It was our school song (the official one, not the rude song we also sang) and takes me back to school assemblies 40 years ago.

sittingonabeach · 13/09/2025 22:47

So many EU flags and hats

Loved the music

solacola · 13/09/2025 22:53

I'll admit to not knowing much about classical music but I was curious as to what Jerusalem is actually about. I just Googled it but still non the wiser!

Top female trumpeter solo.
Alison Balsom. It was her final performance as she is retiring. Terrific.

Yes I enjoyed it and also noticed more European flags than anything else.

There is a concerted effort among those standing in the arena to display EU flags and outnumber Union Jacks! There was at least one concert this season disrupted by protests

UnNiddeRides · 13/09/2025 23:03

The vote options aren’t clear. The ‘playlist’ on the last night is always going to be predictable, but no less enjoyable anyway.

Watching such skilled artistes giving their all always makes me a little emotional, and Danny Boy’ had me reaching for the tissues.

I may be wrong but I've always understood it to be musing on the obscure theory that Christ visited England at some point during the many years when his life is unrecorded.

Hence the lines "And did those feet in ancient times walk upon England's mountains green? , and was the Holy Lamb of God in England's pleasant pastures seen"
Etc

Google the lyrics with this theory in mind perhaps

swingingbytheseat · 13/09/2025 23:13

I watched it to cheer myself up and it worked - it’s wonderful

BethBynnag86 · 13/09/2025 23:16

It was superb.I haven't been able to get to London during the Proms season for some years now but next year I'm going to make a concerted (Geddit?😉) effort to travel down and attend a couple.

CrystalSingerFan · 13/09/2025 23:20

I watched it all and loved it. I used to go to the Proms (never the last night) and it was brilliantly nostalgic. Elim Chan (Hong Kong Chinese) was the conduct(ress) and a star. French soprano was fantastic ('proper' classical songs AND My Fair Lady stuff (pre-and-post elocution lessons)). Brian May and his guitar in Bohemian Rhapsody! Loads of EU (and French) flags.

Could have done without God Save the King, mind you. (I'm a Republican.)

I always assume it’s “maybe Christ came to England. That would have been cool. Whatever, I’m going to work really hard and try to create a heavenly city here in England”. Out of Rule Britannia, Land of Hope and Glory and Jerusalem I like Jerusalem best, because it’s about trying to create a good place to live, rather than expanding the physical boundaries of an empire.

Anyway yes, I did enjoy the last night. I went to two proms in person this year and they were both great. Did anyone else think something weird was going on in the audience during the sea shanties? There seemed to be some shouting or a scuffle, and then the mic seemed to be turned down on the audience. But maybe they were just being a bit rowdy.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 13/09/2025 23:22

I enjoyed it and I’m one of the least jingoistic people- really not into the mindless style of patriotism.

But I like celebrating what is good, and I like the kind of patriotism which is trying to do our best for this country. To try to make it the best it can be.
