I posted on social media about how the media is despairing over the murder of Charlie Kirk, but is silent regarding the atrocities happening in Gaza.

My “friend” messaged me to say that I was “on the wrong side of history” and the march, which happened in London today shows the voices of the majority.

What would you do in this situation?

Don't ever talk about politics online

BlueSlate · 13/09/2025 18:36

Why do you feel you need to 'do' anything. You have different opinions. Isn't that OK in a friendship?

I would agree with never discussing or sharing anything political online.

Danioyellow · 13/09/2025 18:36

I’d stop talking out of my arse. On what planet are you on where the media isn’t talking about Gaza?

MintTwirl · 13/09/2025 18:37

It depends, if it’s someone you want to remain friends with then just reply saying some neutral like we all have our own views. If you aren’t bothered about them then just ignore of delete them,
I try to avoid political chat on social media though.

ResusciAnnie · 13/09/2025 18:38

The media has been talking a lot about the atrocities in Gaza, no?

I wouldn’t do anything. There’s nothing to ‘do’, is there? Are you considering arguing with her over it? I wouldn’t have made political posts on social in the first place though.

SingingintheRadiator · 13/09/2025 18:38

On what planet is Gaza not being talked about?

Apart from that, you’re either both grown enough to have a difference of opinion and stay friends or you’re not and you don’t.

ResusciAnnie · 13/09/2025 18:40

Also aren’t people able to care about more than one thing at once? I don’t see the comparison between Charlie Kirk and Gaza really. Why one or the other?

Bambamhoohoo · 13/09/2025 18:40

I don’t know why people post about politics on social media if they are not actively inviting these messages or counter posts- what did you think would happen?

although for the above reasons I never post about politics on social media (where I am named, at least) I’d probably delete and block the friend as she sounds like an unhealthy connection

Ponderingwindow · 13/09/2025 18:47

Your premise is flawed, the media is giving plenty of attention to Gaza.

The other issue is to recognize that in both the U.S. and the UK there is a growing right wing movement. I believe that many of the every day people being swept into this movement don’t realize the greater implications. They see a crumbling economy and a crumbling social infrastructure and are reacting by turning to what they see as conservative values.

The problem is that the powerful people within this movement do not have the best interests of the lower and middle classes at heart. They are willing to harm their own supporters to get more power. The end goal is not a minor societal correction. This is a fascist movement and the supporters are being played.

So what do you do? I suggest you speak to your friend about politics in person.

amylou8 · 13/09/2025 18:55

Don't talk about politics with your friend (or anyone) if you find people having views that differ from your own so abhorrent.

I’d stop talking out of my arse. On what planet are you on where the media isn’t talking about Gaza?

in short, this.

ThejoyofNC · 13/09/2025 19:03

Gaza is plenty talked about.

People who absolutely must link every last thing to Gaza are exhausting.

Exactly.

Gaza and Charlie Kirk - never realised they were mutually exclusive...

ComfortFoodCafe · 13/09/2025 19:04

Gaza is talked about loads, give over.

Ablondiebutagoody · 13/09/2025 19:05

The media talks about Gaza all the time

TessoftheBurgervan · 13/09/2025 19:06

Is the media silent about the deaths in Gaza?

AngelofIslington · 13/09/2025 19:07

I haven’t searched any information regarding Gaza but I know what is going on due to the media reporting it so you are wrong there op.
I was told years ago never to discuss salary, politics or religion with just anyone, that still holds for me, can’t imagine posting this on Social Media.

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 13/09/2025 19:09

How close are you? I’m not one to talk about politics on social media, but I do think that what people post can give a pretty good insight in to whether or not I’d like to carry on an online friendship with acquaintances.
I’ve blocked someone I know from years back in the last couple of days because their posts don’t sit well with me.

UnhappyHobbit · 13/09/2025 19:22

I don’t think a single day has gone by in the past year without seeing something about Gaza. What’s remarkable about being human is that we’re capable of caring about more than one issue at once. We can feel sympathy and outrage for the suffering in Gaza while also feeling sadness for Charlie Kirk’s family. But I do think people are starting to push back against being told, every few minutes, that they must only focus on Gaza whenever another tragedy comes up. It feels condescending, and in the end, it just highlights how limited your empathy really is

OakDeane24 · 13/09/2025 19:24

What would I do? Accept people have varying opinions and if its going to impact you to this point dont post your opinion on social media...
