Camping was never one of those things we did as a family growing up. I'm quite outdoorsy and practical. I haven't booked a holiday this year because I've been so put off by the cost (holiday accommodation seems so expensive now, particularly if I want to take my dog which adds £20 a night).

Am I being completely crazy thinking at the age of 40 I can buy a cheap tent and sleeping bag and have a nice time camping just me and the dog? Id aim to do what I'd typically do, walks during the day and pub dinners. But just saving on the accommodation.

The coldest I have ever been, was sleeping on a blow up mattress. It is just cold air beneath you. Horrible.

Agree that if you can be arsed, and if you can fit it in your car (assuming you have a car!), something like this can make a huuuuuuge difference to comfort levels.

I speak as someone who once had a camper van, and when it died I was determined to make my tent as comfy as possible. People often asked to take photos of it, it was an absolute princess palace!

Tents have the advantage of not having engines that die or a chassis that goes rusty. And there is nothing as lovely as the sound of rain pattering on the tent when you are cosy inside. Although hopefully you will pay attention to the weather forecast before going 😉

Oh but if you do stick with an air mattress, a fleece over it as the "bottom sheet" does the job nicely

I used to camp as a child-didnt like it then and no chance i would do it now. I like my warm showers, toilet where i can flush, my own bed etc- everyrhings a major downgrade when camping i dont see any of it as a holiday.
