2 year old fell down steps and hit her head

My 2 year old just fell down the bottom 5 steps of our stairs and hit her head on the wall. The stairs turn the corner so when she fell off the step, she hit the wall and bounced round the last steps to the floor. All carpeted. Remarkably, she seems fine. She howled for a minute then said she tumbled down the stairs. She told us she hit the back of her head when she fell.

She is moving and speaking fine, no scrapes or lumps I can feel, she's a bit quiet but I think that's because she got a big shock. I think she's okay but my parents never brought us to the doctor as children so I might not be the best to judge. My husband thinks she's okay too. We're keeping an eye on the usual head injury stuff but should I bring her in to A&E get checked out because she hit her head?

When you say keeping an eye on all the usual head injury stuff I assume you mean this list from the NHS. As long as she isn't displaying any of these symptoms then you are fine to go about your day. If you can try and distract her and get her doing something you might be better able to judge if she's behaving normally.

DD2 did something similar when she was around 2.5yo. We called 111 for advice, explained exactly what happened, and they advised we get her checked over. We have a paeds a&e near us so we took her there, they did some checks and gave us some advice about what to do for the next 24hrs. I tend to err on the side of caution with head injuries though. I was also heavily pregnant at the time and I wanted the reassurance of a professional having checked her over.

Personally I would always go to a&e with head injury. I always did with my children. Surely it’s better to be safe than sorry? Let the professionals glance their eyes over your little one and then you’ll be reassured.
