Do you check every payslip and save them for your records?

I was wondering how many people actually check their payslips every month and keep them for future reference. Do you go through each one to make sure everything adds up or do you just assume it’s correct if your salary hits your account as expected?

Also, do you save all your payslips, either digitally or in paper form? I know some people who keep every single one, while others don’t bother at all. AIBU to think that checking and keeping them is just good financial sense?

I do check and save them but I also had a huge cockup of overpayment with mat pay so never trust my work to get it right!

GloryFades · 12/09/2025 21:56

Check every month, and have them saved electronically. But I am an accountant…

SoSoLong · 12/09/2025 21:57

I save them, I don't check them unless I notice something wrong with the overall sum.

Sixtimesnow · 12/09/2025 21:58

I've read about people on the NHS pension scheme having to prove their earnings. I think it makes sense to keep them. Records get lost.

TeenLifeMum · 12/09/2025 21:59

Mine are online so I don’t store them as such, but I check each month as my manager is terrible at signing off my overtime/out of hours/mileage so I have to check them remind her to process so I get it the next month. Until this manager I didn’t check.

Bumply · 12/09/2025 22:01

I check it’s the same amount each month, and once a year or whenever that the pay rise is as expected.

Same here.

MajesticWhine · 12/09/2025 22:02

I very rarely check and I don't save them. If I am due a pay rise or something I might check it. I keep my P60 which I need for my tax return.

HellsBells13 · 12/09/2025 22:05

Yes, each and every single one. It transpires I have not been paid homeworking element for over 3 years.Fighting tooth and nail for this to be paid.

Littletreefrog · 12/09/2025 22:07

I have a quick look but it's always the same so not a lot to check. They are emailed to my personal email so I don't specifically keep them but I could still access them if needed

IMissSparkling · 12/09/2025 22:14

Don't check them, don't save them, wouldn't even notice if the amount was wrong unless it was REALLY wrong (like, hundreds of pounds out).

Comefromaway · 12/09/2025 22:14

I used to save them when they were paper copies & I checked them each month.

Now my job s payroll so I produce my own payslip along with everyone else’s. They are sent by email so they are all there if I need them.

EveryDayisFriday · 12/09/2025 22:16

Yes but only because I'm the Finance Manager and it's second nature to me. Also, my MD organises the payroll and there have been the odd mistake in the past.

Oxo01 · 12/09/2025 22:17

I had a spring clean of mine last year when I stopped working they went back to 1980's (40 yrs with same company) lol

But ive kept most the recent years and any monthly pension updates and P60's.

Been doing some today i like a print out of things so if for example car insurance etc is run out I replace/ keep untill the next year.

Dbank · 12/09/2025 22:18

I don't think I have ever checked a payslip, certainly not in the last 40 years.

Possibly foolishly, I assume they are correct.

WorthySloth · 12/09/2025 22:20

I check mine. I’m hourly paid and like to make sure I’ve been paid properly including my overtime payments and weekend rates etc. Last place I worked was shocking really every pay slip was missing at least one shift. So I don’t trust anyone 🤣🤣

BotterMon · 12/09/2025 22:23

Always check to ensure expenses have been reimbursed especially mileage and that any bonuses/dividends due have been paid. They're filed electronically as needed for tax return.

stayathomer · 12/09/2025 22:23

I went through them for the first time this morning! I don’t understand one or two things on this week’s but am off sick since yesterday and on holidays next week so it’s the ultimate in typicalness that I can’t ask anyone. Am hoping they won’t readjust at some stage before Christmas as I’ve some big bills coming up

tripleginandtonic · 12/09/2025 22:36

I've kept every one of my payslips. And needed them because some years pensions were missing.

JaceLancs · 12/09/2025 22:47

They are accessible through electronic system so don’t need to keep or save
I am salaried so same payment every month - only check if there has been any changes eg pay increase

Bycosycat · 12/09/2025 22:48

Quickly check and then keep them, as I have experience of dealing with pensions in education. It is surprising how service records are inaccurate/partially lost. A contract doesn’t prove pension contributions were made but your payslips do, and frequently people don’t check their service records, until nearing retirement.

brunettemic · 12/09/2025 22:48

I have a quick look, mostly to check my mileage is right. I don’t save them, I can get the current employer ones from our system if I need to.

I’m an accountant and my own costs are part of financial modelling that I do so I know the value it should be.

Kitchenbattle · 12/09/2025 23:13

Yes I check them every month. No need to keep them as they are all on the workday system.

Katieweasel · 13/09/2025 04:49

DH is paid weekly and he checks his as at least once a month he is paid wrong. He works shifts so gets different shift allowances and also works overtime. He also gets an enhanced holiday payment when he takes annual leave. It infuriates me when he’s paid incorrectly. A one off mistake I understand but its so regular that I started to think it was deliberate. Luckily we have a buffer as I’m paid monthly so can still cover bills if his salary is wrong but a few years back we were living week to week and being paid incorrectly would have been a much bigger issue. Last week he was missing 15 hours overtime as it was paid to the person below him on the payroll!

TurquoiseDress · 13/09/2025 06:00

I check mine every month and then save a copy/as a PDF and email it to myself, putting it in a payslips

Why would you not want to know what’s in your payslip? If your work has made a pay error, especially if under paid etc, you really need to know this and get on their case- nobody else will do it for you!
