Do I need to be worried?

Went to McDonald's yesterday evening.
Got handed the meal at the drive through window.
Realised too late that one of the straws had fresh blood on it.
Is there any risk to health? Should I complain?

You honestly have no idea iv been in and out of cmht services for over 20 years trying to get help with this im on multiple different medications. I have regular gp check ins have had top to toe mri's multiple times iv have thousands of pages of medical records and a&e records. Trust me its destroyed my life I absolutely would not have drank out of that straw as I know where that would lead to and I certainly wouldn't be posting on mumsnet I would of been straight to a&e hours ago that is the true reality of severe health anxiety so don't you dare say i have no idea. Are you even diagnosed or just self diagnosed?

Edited

I think a lot of people self diagnose ‘health anxiety’. The same people where everything is ‘trauma’ and everything sends them ‘spiralling’

If that is the case @youalright then I'm truly sorry for you.
There are an awful lot of people with too much time on their hands hanging around AIBU. You can't be too careful.

Are you saying you've got AIDs? @Ymiryboo

I've just seen the iBase website.

You can NOT catch HIV from:

  • Eating any food, cooked or uncooked, with blood on it.

Honestly you don't have to apologise I can totally understand why you thought that and sorry if iv been harsh you honestly will be ok I know easier said then done just try to distract yourself maybe stick a film on a comedy is always a good way to go and make yourself a cuppa hopefully you've had some reassurance from others comments x

I think some points are being missed here.
no, if the OP didn’t come into contact with the straw she’s not at risk.
but a member of staff with an actively bleeding wound handling anything is absolutely not appropriate.

of course you wouldn’t need to contact 111 or the like, but I absolutely would have complained at the time. But after the event is too little too late.

Thanks so much @youalright, take care x

That was my thought at the time. I agree it's too late for a complaint now. @AnyoneWhoHasAHeart

Great info @Springtimehere. I know there's such a small chance of anything bad happening from this, but health anxiety leads you to the worst possible outcomes.

Here are some photos.

No prep is a preventative drug people take to stop them getting HIV.

Is that the one with blood that you didn’t use? Or the one that you did use?

SpinCycling · 12/09/2025 19:44

It's not like that @youalright. Blood can contain a whole host of nasties.

I didn't see his hands @ToKittyornottoKitty. He was clearly wounded as the straw had blood on it.

I’d be more worried about the ‘nasties’ in the McDonalds food.

Anyone with a brain around tonight?

Clearly not

SpinCycling · 13/09/2025 15:24

That was the straw I didn't use.
@ToKittyornottoKitty

You're right @SeeYouInHell it was for convenience only.

Been there! But don’t worry about the blood you will be fine. As pp said that’s why the straw has a cover.
