I hate my stupid house where everything is broken

I have just spent an hour unscrewing and rescrewing a panel at the back of the tumble dryer to find out why all the lights are flashing and it isn't working... The "smart" diagnostics app thing is just giving me the circle of doom and not telling me anything, I have cleaned all the filters etc. but it is just flashing and I spent £50 on a new condenser which has done eff all. I have ordered new flapper for my en suite toilet which is not flushing properly, I spent hours plunging it did not help, I have had to replace the washing machine last month after months of having to drain it manually it finally gave up completely. Our main bathroom toilet broke recently and the bath is wonky. The kitchen sink has sunk and we need a new kitchen. I haven't been on holiday this year and I spent my week off clearing out the attic. I have to replace beds, desks and shelves in two bedrooms and our sofa is on its way out.... I just want to bugn our stupid house down and live in a cave. I am menopausal and stressed and that is all.

Who else lives in your house?

MixedBananas · 10/09/2025 20:58

Sorry OP. Feel your pain. We are in a rental and the Dear LL is avoiding fixing issues here and it often makes me depressed.

I would delegate to other family members if you can?

atinydropofcherrysherry · 10/09/2025 21:02

we replaces a shower, shower pump, had a leak for ages, replaced the big bed, bought three new shelving units and still there are so many old and stinky things like old carpets, mould in winter, scratches and stains on things, ripped sofa which I covered with cushions and throws, broken springs on the mattress which I have not replaced but waiting for a makeshift mattress protector which will cushion my back against the broken springs, rats in loft - the most recent one ....I too, had today a doom scroll in my own mind on account of my stupid house

atinydropofcherrysherry · 10/09/2025 21:04

we spent 1000s. Still looks and smells like old dirty mouldy place

to who to delegate the bad feelings though? Me and the husband shared the effort, the cost and the work. He is happy go lucky, but this place eats me up mentally sometimes.

I am the main diy-er in the house. DH helps but lacks the practical skills particularly with plumbing. I am not alone in this but I am doing the fixing generally. We have been saving to get the kitchen replaced and the other things but it feels relentless. I started a new job this week and it all feels a bit much at the moment. I just want a week where things work and I don't have to fix anything...

Can you afford to save a tackle one job at a time.
Some small improvements can help .

For those that think old houses are full of character- they're not, they are endless money drainers. I'm fed up of the endless cycle of repainting, replastering, new kitchen, rewiring, new bathroom, rebuilding chimneys, new back door, rising damp, new downpipes, new windows ......
I hate new houses but I dont want to have tradesmen in my house on a monthly basis. I am never buying an old house again.

OneEagerOchrePanda · 10/09/2025 21:53

Ive been feeling exactly the same recently seems to be one thing after another. Had to pay a plumber to fix a leak in our shower, now seems our kitchen tap needs replacing, and three out of four rings on our electric hob have now stopped working (gradually went one by one) so looks like we need to get that replaced too. Im also so desperate for new flooring and other things but no money so it’ll have to wait…

Catsandcwtches · 10/09/2025 21:56

I’ve been thinking about trying to move house, this is now putting me off! Better the devil you know? Main problem with my house at the moment is I have a plumbing job but can’t find a plumber who will actually get back to me.

Bloatstoat · 10/09/2025 22:06

I'm absolutely with you OP. The list of things that need replacing and that we've somehow cobbled together to keep going grows ever longer. It's a nightmare when other people come round as well and you have to keep warning them things don't work properly or as they should do, and then you forget and it's back to square one.

My house isn't even that old, not old enough to be considered full of character anyway, just past its best and a bit fed up. Which describes me too.

Oh my gosh - SAME
have approached, reached and wildly crashed through the point of just thinking the only solution is to up sticks and move into a hotel then none of this is our problem anymore (need a winning lotto ticket first)

TalulahJP · 10/09/2025 22:27

With regard to the tumble dryer have you gone on YouTube? Same thing happened here. There’s an overheat switch that you poke with a screwdriver that resets it. It may of course be different but have a google.

Catarinabella · 10/09/2025 22:33

So sorry, I feel your pain. I live alone since my very practical, hands on diy partner died, 3 years ago and I often feel so overwhelmed with home maintenance. Feel i

BlueRidgeMountain · 10/09/2025 22:42

I feel your pain. We have a list as long as your arm of stuff that needs fixing - includes boiler that seems to have a water leak somewhere but nobody can figure where in the system; broken blinds in our bedroom; sitting room door that won’t shut properly; hoover held together by electricians tape; carpet in one bedroom that’s worn down to the gripper (discovered when I trod on it with no shoes on). Every time I save a bit money to tackle one of these jobs, some emergency happens that sucks up all the money and we are back to square one. This months emergency involves the cat getting into a scrap - one abcess and several hundred pounds later our boiler/blinds money has gone. Yes insurance will pay out eventually, probably just in time for the next emergency!

I feel in good company in my misery but I am sorry about everyone's maintenance nightmares.

@TalulahJP I did look up a YouTube video (it's my jam) but unfortunately our model doesn't have the handy reset switch - that was why I removed the panel at the back this evening. I blame profiteering appliance manufacturers as they make sure you end up paying extortionate CC all out fees to fix simple faults ugh! I have given up and am watching Mansfield Park in bed, fantasizing about having a housekeeper and maids etc to do all the hard work.

Bummer it didnt work. Sigh.

Post the make and model on here in a new thread tomorrow and maybe someone will know the sequence to press or whatever. MN really is amazing.

AStitchinTime9 · 10/09/2025 22:55

We had similar! My DH isn’t that good at DIY but we got some workmen in and took a couple of weeks off work, with our list. Cost a fortune but we tackled the main jobs. Going to paint it ourselves. Maybe that will help make it feel fresher.

My (now) ex husband moved us into a remote off-grid 380 year old pile of mouldy mouse infested rocks. Six months later he moved out. Yay.
The house was declared uninhabitable but was in negative equity. I had no money and no choice but to learn a lot of skills very quickly, viz: mortaring, plastering, carpentry, plumbing, flatpack assembly etc. I had a sparky to do the electrics. It took me about five years but I turned that place around and made it functional and beautiful.
When I sold it I made an absolute bomb and bought my next house outright.
Don't give up. Tackle one 'thing' at a time and keep visualising how you want it to be when you are done.
