Vapes should be taxed to cover the millions it costs to dispose of them

Vapes. Causing fires in waste disposal. Cost millions to dispose of safely due to their fire risk.

So add tax to them to cover the costs

They should be charging the companies that make them rather than putting a tax on

TreesTreesBeesBees · 09/09/2025 08:51

A billion pounds a year spent on waste. What a waste of money.

The vape industry must be making billions.

"Vapes catch fire when crushed. This often happens in bin lorries or recycling centres - one of the reasons they were banned in June.

They are called "bombs in bins" because of the fires they cause. Vapes should be returned to stores or recycling centres for specialist handling, not added to general recycling or general waste.

In June alone, Biffa had to deal with 60 fires caused by vapes and other small electrical items. Once the fire has occurred, it's hard to pinpoint the exact cause.

Biffa said dealing with this problem costs the UK waste industry a billion pounds a year."

Fair comment. The amount of waste generated by vaping is colossal.

Im assuming you don't agree with tax on vapes then.

Assume they are a vaper.

This affects us all, and I agree with you @TreesTreesBeesBees

Millions of these must be lying on waste land across the country. I pick up and dispose of at least 8 each month on my regular walks. The danger of fire and the pollution is concerning but the kids who yeet them into the bushes are oblivious.

TreesTreesBeesBees · 09/09/2025 08:55

Someone needs to pay for the waste disposal, the fires they cause, the environment impact. If not the users then the companies that profit from them, which no doubt will mean the consumers then.

That and a deposit to encourage recycling.

They are everywhere now.

AI says: The UK tax on vapes, called Vaping Products Duty, will be a flat rate of £2.20 per 10ml of vaping liquid and will be introduced on October 1, 2026. This tax will apply to all vape liquids, including nicotine-free ones, and will be in addition to the existing 20% VAT.

Return when you buy next one, straight into recycling box and then buy one a bit cheaper? Obviously there will still be the people who.dont care and toss anywhere.

Thanks for this. Good news. Hopefully this will be used towards disposal costs?

Guessing they are, since 'jog on' doesn't really say much. 🤣

I don't have an issue with a disposal tax, but presumably it should be applied to all sorts of other items that are expensive to dispose of too?

Some things eg oil, plasterboard and larger items are taxed at the recycling centre as you drop off. More difficult with tiny items so a tax on purchases makes sense, front loading the disposal cost.

I see there is something coming in next year.

Disposable vapes have been banned since 1st of June.

This is such a good idea. But for some reason we can't even get a decent bottle deposit scheme going in England. I wish our government would be more creative!

Everyone should be aware of the dangers of Li-Ion batteries if improperly treated or disposed of because they're in all sorts of things. Every rechargeable device you own will have one in.

On a thread recently some anti-vaping zealot suggested to OP she should smash her DD's vape with a hammer!

Indeed, but people still use them, also people throw away refillable vapes too, the problem hasn't improved as per the article.

I agree they need disposal of correctly and safely. It costs millions hence a tax to cover that.
