I feel really unhealthy and I’m pretty sure if I don’t change something I’ll be at risk of diabetes or heart attack.
today I woke up I had

breakfast - 2 biscuits and a chocolate bar

crisps and a vegan sausage roll as a snack

lunch - fake chicken nuggets salad and hummus, grapes

another Chocolate bar and another bag of crisps

dinner - huge bowl of tomato pasta with pepper mushrooms and cheese
Another chocolate bar and 2 chunky cookies

having written that down I realise how unhealthy i am ! This isn’t just today this is most days.

im really unhealthy aren’t I?

It's not a great diet but a lot will depend on your weight. If you are super active and a healthy weight you'll get away with it for a lot longer.

OJR · 08/09/2025 22:01

I’m overweight ( 12 weeks postpartum) and breastfeeding but that’s no excuse for what I’ve eaten. I’m two stone over from being in healthy range x

It’s not the worst diet I have ever seen but J feel you already want to eat healthier. Changing up your diet is one of the easiest things you can do for your health but it does take planning, time and, unfortunately, the funds to be able to do so.

Thisistemporary · 08/09/2025 22:02

That’s a lot of chocolate and crisps.

How old are you and what’s yours BMI/cholesterol/blood pressure/ levels?

OJR · 08/09/2025 22:04

BMI is over weight but I’m not sure of the rest, blood pressure was done the other day and that was ok x

I've been there in the depths of baby life.

Its bad, what is your normal diet like?

I'd increase veg and healthy fats even if you can't stop eating the crap at the moment, at least that will reduce the impact on your gut bacteria.

2025mustbebetter · 08/09/2025 22:06

Start with a healthier breakfast. I'm really bad at sugary snacks and I find changing everything in one go is too much. Try out some breakfast ideas and see what you like best and go with it. Then maybe some snacks leading to lunches then dinner etc.

I am also a lazy cook and I've learnt to embrace that and change up some of the convenience foods I get for lower sugar types.

It's also really hard not to read way too much or look at too much social media about it and feel like I'm constantly eating wrong so I've learnt to say well if it's better than before I have improved and still have time to improve more...

My current favourite breakfasts are overnight oats with Greek yoghurt or Greek yoghurt and fruit. I also like cereal but it doesn't keep me full as long.

I've started having leftovers for lunch so I only have to think about the evening meal plan.

I wish I could say my snacks are great. They have improved a bit though so not as bad as before!

Mercurial123 · 08/09/2025 22:06

It's pretty bad it's like the 80/20 diet in reverse?!

Thisistemporary · 08/09/2025 22:09

Just saw your post to say you’re 12 weeks postpartum. Sleep deprivation gave me huge sugar cravings so I empathise.

Pollqueen · 08/09/2025 22:12

Yes, that's a lot of sugar. Appreciate you've not long had a baby but you're obviously aware that your diet is not great so you can turn it around

WhereIsMyJumper · 08/09/2025 22:19

OP, give yourself a break. You’re breastfeeding and you’ve just had a baby. When I was at that stage the HV told me to eat anything and everything because you’re burning so many calories. You can make a gradual change if it would make you feel better, maybe swap some of the sugary snacks for something calorie dense but not full of sugar but I don’t think right now is time for a life style change.

Endofyear · 08/09/2025 22:31

It doesn't sound great - a lot of that food is high in calories but nutritionally empty. It's hard when you've got a new baby but there's a few changes you can start making -

Don't buy the crisps and chocolate bars - if you haven't got them in the house, you won't eat them!

Drink a big glass of water when you wake up and before every meal or snack - we often mistake thirst for hunger.

Try and pack more nutrition into every meal - base them on protein + fruit and vegetables. For snacks, eat nuts & berries and protein rich yoghurt, eggs or cheese.

For a sweet treat, try making some date bark https://realfood.tesco.com/recipes/date-bark.html

Or yoghurt and berry frozen clusters

It's not great but you should go easy on yourself you are breastfeeding a tiny baby. I think if you are able to start the day with a good breakfast it really helps, starting with chocolate sets you up to fail a bit (no judgement!) I find if I can have eggs in the morning I'm not so hungry later

Your health visitor needs to train in nutrition.

Calories expended additional to normal when breast feeding is circa 400.

To put that into context it's about 110g of dry pasta, 5 average biscuits or 3 tablespoons of oil.

It's not a massive amount, the OP's diet is garbage, UPF primarily with low nutrient value, and they're fueling their body which in turn is fueling another human being with that garbage.

OP whether or not you're a walking talking heart attack depends mostly on your height and weight, switch to simple whole foods and ditch the UPF and sugar. You'll feel 1000 times better for it.

You're currently a one way ticket to diabetes and obesity.
