I just wondered. What is it like to have a new car ? A new bathroom? A new kitchen? Built in wardrobe?

It feels like we have scraped to get married ( tiny wedding ) get out car ( 2013 model). I’m honestly just wondering what does it feel like to be able to get a new bathroom? It’s my dream but I think it would be 10 years on minimum.

We have a 2 and 3 year old. Nursery fees are finally down to £700 for both. We know we can’t afford a 3 bed where we are. So we have a 2. We are lucky as we get buy every month and manage to save £250 .We have no debts . We go on a cheap all inclusive all year and we are happy and healthy

I just wonder what does it feel like to have something new ? Or design it ! I dream
of designing a kitchen.

I think I’m seeing far too many kitchens on instagram and dream! We currently have an undercounter fridge which has been going 10 years. I dream of a big fridge !!

AIBU to dream of having some ‘new’ things which I have picked !!! Oh to dream !

When I was first married with small DC I couldn't afford anything new. I bought everything second hand or was often given handmedowns by my family we ho knew I was so poor. As your DC grow up you will become better off. I think it's a shame that when you need things the most when kids care small money is so tight but as you get older and DC leave home you are so much better off. I've never bothered about a new car though as to me a car is just functional to gete from A to B. DH thinks the same. Picking a new kitchen is great though because you can have things exactly where you want them. You will get one, for yourself one day.

I must admit, my new bathroom is insta-worthy and brings me joy every day. I literally stand in the shower and admire my lovely bathroom 🤣🤣

I have a new car every 3 years through my son’s motability. I’d swap it every single time for him not to need it.

We finally had fitted carpets installed I took the dc to my parents overnight, and dh stayed to move furniture and supervise. When we returned it was like walking into a Changing Room reveal. I was blown away with delight! Even though I had chosen the carpets. I don't think I'll ever forget that thrill of how beautiful our house now was, how cosy, how welcoming.

Stressful. We did a complete renovation, the builders were awful, and I have two boys under 5 so everything is slowly getting trashed. However, the water softener has meant the bathrooms are always so clean, I love it. New car also has 1,000 dings and scuffs (driving in London!).

I have a new kitchen. Almost the cheapest one available, but I love it. I lived with the old one, literally falling apart around me (bits falling off, door laminate peeling off, floor tiles cracked) for 15 years, because it needed replacing when I bought the house.

The rest of the house desperately needs doing too, but at my age I doubt I'll ever finish it all now.

I dream of a new kitchen - ours is over 40 years old, and a new bathroom as we still have the original 1963 bathroom the house had when it was built.

At this point I have no hopes of ever having either, but I do like to think about what tiles I would choose.

When we moved here, almost 40 years ago, we needed to replace the filthy, 60's bathroom and put cupboards into the kitchen. We did both ourselves with help from family and bought the cheapest MFI cupboards and bathroom stuff as that's all we could afford. Although cheap, they lasted well but after 35 years of use had begun to fall apart - literally in the case of the kitchen cupboards and drawers. Finally, two years ago we had a new bathroom and kitchen. This time, we used specialist companies/fitters and couldn't be happier. We did the bathroom first. No stress at all - the company listened to what we wanted, drew up a design and we then sat down with them to make any adjustments. Although they ripped everything out, they always made sure we had a toilet to use overnight, so we never had to worry about portaloos!
For the kitchen, a friend's husband works as a fitter for a well known kitchen company and he helped up to design our kitchen. Because of his experience as a fitter, he was able to spot potential problems before they occurred which helped us to design around them. This meant that when he fitted the kitchen, there were no nasty surprises or extra costs.
I love my new rooms and actually, it's worked out well that we waited for them as we made decisions that we wouldn't have made if we had done them sooner eg; got rid of the bath and have a huge shower which is more practical for us as we get older.
As far as a new car is concerned, we bought our current car when it was six months old. A family member leased it under an employee scheme from the manufacturer and we were able to purchase it at a discounted price. It had less than 500 miles on the clock and still felt new, but at a much better price!

I designed our kitchen and two bathrooms when we moved into our house this year. I had always wanted to do it, and it’s immensely satisfying to see the end results. After years of having a tiny cupboard kitchen, I really appreciate having a bigger one now and the luxuries of a big American fridge and an island! I think you appreciate these things more when you haven’t always had them.

Saying that, we had an absolute nightmare with tradesman and it took 10 weeks to fit our kitchen - we had to cook in the living room which was chaos with young DC, I was also ill at the time. I’m glad it’s done but never again!

We are part way through doing our kitchen. And I've gone past elation to just a bit depressed.
I think it's only the strength of my imagination that keeps.me going.
DH is very DIY orientated but also has a full time, working away important job. The time he booked off was eaten away by work. He also has no full picture vision so couldn't imagine doing the whole room in one go.
The compromise was sink, dishwasher bin, drawer unit from a supply company, DIY fit.
I spent a lot on worktops per m because the templating and fit is a fixed cost.
We still have upper cabinets, island and dresser to go
The lighting is still in boxes, half the new units don't have handles fitted.
So we've spent a lot of money but I'm still heating ready meals and running the toaster from an extension lead to a trestle table.
It's totally put me off planning more stuff with him. This was supposed to be a throw money at professionals job not a continuation of DIY compromise.
I'm 55, this has been my entire life.

BrieAndChilli · 09/09/2025 10:47

not had a new bathroom or kitchen. We have just had the garage knocked down and rebuilt as it was falling apart (had it replaced like for like with the same sort of kit build so although it is new it doesnt seem 'new'!

we did have several new cars as DH had lease cars through work so got to pick what he wanted and any addones / colour of it etc.

Lurleenlumpkin79 · 09/09/2025 10:58

The designing part of our kitchen was really exciting but the building part of nearly 3 weeks with no kitchen, not so much. We also had the living room plastered at the same time, so a couple of weeks being upstairs on takeaways and ready meals with a then 4 year old. We can laugh about it now though.

SplishSplash123 · 09/09/2025 11:31

Just had an extension and the new kitchen does make me very happy (still waiting on the flooring and decorating to be done) - but shiny new appliances and a beautiful island is just wonderful, I adore cooking so I know it'll be a happy place for me.

Wouldn't bother with a new car personally, a few years old is fine. We replaced the bathroom a few years ago and I was happy with most stuff being fairly basic and functional but did spend on a bigger shower enclosure with a decent rainfall shower and that was worth it.

ItsAWonderfulLifeforMe · 09/09/2025 11:55

This thread is interesting, I assumed more people would have bought new kitchens and bathrooms and it’s reassuring that others out there are making do! Would love to re-do the kitchen and will have the money but as bathrooms need doing too eventually (and other updating) I’m actually thinking we might just move. Costs would be similar to the kitchen extension we need to do and I want someone else to have done all the decision making. House would need all these things nice and newish though!

TwinklyFawn · 09/09/2025 13:08

I had my dream kitchen fitted 2 years ago and it was a nightmare from start to finish. I had to make a million decisions about what i wanted. I got bombarded with phone calls and emails. I was left without a cooker, sink and washer for a week. I don't have a downstairs toilet so it was a pain taking the washing up upstairs. I had a new plug socket fitted and i had to get it replaced after a year.

I am currently on my third brand new car in 15 years (kept the previous two for seven years each). I love having a new car but it also scares the life out of me that it is going to get damaged, so spoils the enjoyment for a while.

I have lived in four brand new houses (two rented) and we plan to build one more to retire in. We are overseas so building a new home is generally different to the UK. I found it stressful. You have to choose everything you can imagine from your kitchen and bathroom to the colour of your bricks, colour of the drain pipes, every tap, sink and toilet. Too much choice for me, but love living in a new house and everything being so clean.
