It drives me insane. Food shop arrives and within a day most cupboard snacks / fruit has been eaten. I’ve spoken to everyone on numerous occasions about making things last. Family of 5 plus a dog, spending anywhere between £100-£130 a week. How do you make things last?! (Obviously not fresh stuff with dates but the constant snacking).

edited to add: school lunches and snacks are all provided by school. I get lunch at work too. So this is just home food.

Buying more does not necessarily mean spending more, just buying more of different things.

Not everyone can afford to do that and I do get that, but in that case you have to accept that snacks are going to disappear because you’re not buying enough. You can’t really snack-box your way through simply not buying enough food.

Read the comments.

I keep some snacks aside so that my hoover of a teenage son doesn’t eat them all and leave nothing for the others.

MyDeftDuck · 07/09/2025 13:10

Don’t buy the yummy snacks………if they’re hungry tell them to make a sandwich rather than reaching for cakes, biscuits or crisps……sorted

Winteriscoming80 · 07/09/2025 13:10

Well for comparison our weekly food bill is now £200+ family of 4,shopping at Aldi,
that isn’t a lot of snack stuff,6 bananas is one each for the week.

FightingFish · 07/09/2025 13:10

OP, have you got a Lidl close? I shop there of a morning and they often have 5kg fruit and veg boxes. The food is ‘out of date’ but still good to eat. A bit hit and Miss but they usually include lots of bananas and apples (which last quite some time).

Agree. Honestly

That’s unfortunate but if you cannot afford to buy more then you have to accept that the reason your snacks aren’t lasting is because you are not buying enough to feed the amount of people you have!

There’s no tips here that don’t include increasing the amount of food- which does not necessarily mean increasing the price- but it’s ridiculous to be annoyed at food not lasting when you simply are not buying enough.

FcukBreastCancer · 07/09/2025 13:11

I wouldn't limit fruit. Bananas are cheap.
We generally stick to a max or a sweet thing and crisps per day. It was my mums rule... although I bent the rules as I was older! She tried snack boxes and my dad swapped our good stuff out!! Bast*Rd!

GleisZwei · 07/09/2025 13:11

Remingtonsteele · 07/09/2025 13:08

She’s buying expensive stuff. Fruit needs to be the cheap stuff. Biscuits the same. Snacks from the toddler aisle are a rip off.

She's also choosing expensive places to shop based on cashback - I will guarantee Aldi or Lidl would be cheaper than sainsbos even with a cash back.

I didn't disagree with that, it's simply those telling her how much they spend and that she should do the same - not everyone can afford that. ✌️

Forgot to say the main point, the boxes are £1.50!

We are a family of 5, me, DH, DS17 DD13 DS 9, I've tried to cutback a lot but still end up spending around 230 every sunday shop AND a top upon milk, bread and fruit by Thursday.
How old are your family members, could you look at apps like Olio and pick up treats on there for free

TonTonMacoute · 07/09/2025 13:11

Well, if they run out of snacks they'll have to wait for the next shopping trip, won't they?

Why do you keep giving me the fingers?

Snacks I’ve bought this week : 2 punnets of grapes, 2 x strawberries, 6 bananas, 2 x four milky ways, triple pack of biscuits, 2 x packs of rice cakes, 2 x packs of mini marylands, yoghurts, specific snacks for the toddler.

That amount of fruit doesn't seem close to enough for 5 people. We're a family of 4 (both children under 5) and I would struggle to get our shopping bill below £130 (sadly!).

It does sound like you are going through a lot of biscuits though.

If finances are an issue, could you stock up on cheaper healthy options? Apples and oranges tend to be relatively cheap and last ages. Maybe try frozen berries, though they will probably need mixing with something like yoghurt to be appetising. Nuts and blocks of cheese that can be cut into chunks will probably last longer than biscuits etc.

OonaStubbs · 07/09/2025 13:11

Snacks are a waste of time and money.

ComfortFoodCafe · 07/09/2025 13:12

£130 pw isnt much these days. Sounds like your not buying enough food?

crimsonlake · 07/09/2025 13:12

One solution is to stop buying snacks? When mine lived at home snacks were toast or cereal if hungry.

GleisZwei · 07/09/2025 13:12

Because you’re pointing it towards me? So I am seeing it from the other side? Because I’m not very good at emojis?

What yummy snacks, they get 1 and a half milky ways a week each and a few Maryland mini cookies. Which all together prob isn’t even the size of one normal size one, this isn’t an issue of greed or over eating, it is an issue of very limited snacks.

op, I agree with the others, you need to buy smarter, bananas, apples etc, knock the strawberries on the head.

flr my husband and I, we go through 4 punnets of grapes, 3 punnets of pineapple, several packs of dried mango, and 14 yoghurts a week, we don’t eat the biscuits and stuff though, but when we do or when our daughter is home, we go through that stuff and a much faster rate than 1 and a half milky ways a week each and a few mini cookies. So buy supermarket own label at the cheapest supermarkets if you need to get it.

Or possibly that you don't actually need snacks (that word has ceased to have any meaning) .

If you find the answer please let me know! Currently spending around £300 a week on 3 adults one teen three dogs and a catcand all efforts to reduce spend have failed.

Hairshare · 07/09/2025 13:15

You’re doing well to stick to that budget even without lunches. If the snacks go too quickly how about rationing then in some way, or stop buying them and give each child a weekly allowance for buying their own? You could just provide bread and some spreads for hungry moments.

Douchey · 07/09/2025 13:16

I hide snacks (crisps, mulitpack chocolate bars, biscuits) and stagger them out over the week.

Tiredofwhataboutery · 07/09/2025 12:38

This drives me bonker too. One thing I do do is make massive flapjacks over the weekend. Lots of peanut butter and banana, kilo of oats! Slice wrap and freeze. Then they get one plus fruit for school snack. I find the freezing puts off theft as you’d lose a tooth. I take out of freezer before bed.

Plan for fruit bowl top ups I have to buy 50 bananas, 5 packs of apples, 5 packs of oranges for a week. Which sounds like loads but it’s two - three bits per person per day.

Also hsve snacks available thst are boring so toast, crumpets, oatcakes so they can fill up but not individually wrapped deliciousness which is terribly moreish.

Ooh can you share your flapjack recipe please
