Sad about polyhydramnious pregnancy and stretch marks

workingitout1234 · 06/09/2025 19:54

With my daughter I didn’t get a single stretch mark as I kept active didnt overeat and gave birth at 37+1 and bounced back quite well,
in this pregnancy (37 weeks today) I have found out a week a go i have polyhydraminous (extra fluid) and it’s caused by gestational diabetes

im a bit annoyed as I had a midwife appointment at 31 weeks but they didn’t measure my tummy, had they have done this they may have picked up I was measuring big

but I’ve found out too late and due to being diabetic and untreated it’s now led to me having this excess fluid, painful heavy massive tummy, changed my labour plans (they will now need to induce) and I have stretch marks appearing all over my tummy and it feels like my skin is going to rip

it’s so uncomfortable

i don’t really know what I’m asking for here I just feel really down today about it all. It’s not just the stretch marks it’s the way I feel it’s so uncomfortable but the stretch marks really did upset me when I noticed them today as I feel like this could have been prevented had they have measured my tummy when supposed to,

sorry - but get over yourself - stretch marks are just part of many pregnancies.

Is your baby safe ? Are you ok with your sugar levels ? All that matters is you have a viable birth and safe delivery - a few stretch marks are nothing. sugar k lm rocks can be controlled during delivery and monitored closely of necessary.

concentrate on having a safe delivery and then enjoy every moment of your beautiful baby… that’s all thst is really important

Stretch marks fade a lot. Don't worry about it. Keep focused on a health delivery because that's what matters.

workingitout1234 · 06/09/2025 20:46

Thank you I know I’m being silly, I deep down do know but the extra fluid puts me at higher risk of stillbirth, postpartum haemorrhage, complications with the baby.
and I feel that they could have prevented that by measuring my tummy when it was due to be measured and then it would have been picked up that I was getting big and needed a scan.
i would then have known about GD and been able to prevent the complications I’ve ended up with :?

I think the previous replies are a bit harsh OP.

You’re allowed to feel let down and disappointed that things haven’t gone so smoothly this time.

From what you say, it feels to me as though it’s not the stretch marks per se that are upsetting you, it’s what they signify (being let down by medical professionals resulting in a change in birth plan and discomfort from the extra fluid).

Of course, having a healthy baby is way more important than not having stretch marks, but you’re allowed to want to look and feel like yourself too. We go through so many changes to have babies and it’s a difficult road to come to accept these changes. The physical changes of having two kids still upset me occasionally when I’m trying on a dress that I know would have previously suited me and now looks dreadful!

If it were me, I would allow myself to sit with the grief of things not having gone how I would have hoped, but once I’d come to terms with it, focus on getting my baby here and enjoying the newborn days.

Hope all goes well for you going forward! 💐

You might'be got the stretch marks anyway. I didn't get any first time, 3 yrs later and actually a smaller baby and bump but I did get them. I think I was that bit older and my body was probably more knackered out from the first baby still.

MidnightPatrol · 06/09/2025 21:08

My pregnancy went on to 42 weeks, and I got some stretch marks under my bump at the end. I was upset too.

Now, you can’t see anything there at all. So - they may pretty much disappear.

I think your health challenges with the pregnancy would have happened regardless - so you can’t really blame the NHS.

whatcanthematterbe81 · 06/09/2025 21:42

Sorry you’re feeling like this. You would still have the stretch marks tho. But they will fade. I understand how you feel and you’re fine to moan about it. That’s what we’re here for

Get over yourself is a bit mean! Poor op

CharmCharmCharm · 06/09/2025 21:49

Stretch marks are unfortunately just luck of the draw, you can’t prevent them by being active or not overeating or retaining fluid or putting on special cream etc, it’s just one of the ways our bodies can be changed by having children. When your lovely child is here you will look at them and privately think they are worth it. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy!

Unnecessary! Thank god there’s other nice people on here. We’re allowed to sweat the small stuff sometimes.

Allthesnowallthetime · 06/09/2025 21:56

Aw OP, you sound stressed by it all. I'm sorry.

If it helps at all, I had polyhydramnious with my second pregnancy (no GD, there wasn't any particular reason). Was 38 weeks when it was discovered and I don't think it could have been prevented.

I had a healthy baby at term. She's now grown up and married.

Hope it goes well for you, tooFlowers.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 06/09/2025 22:07

How do you know you were measuring big at 31 weeks if they didn’t measure you?

MIAMNER · 07/09/2025 00:15

I had this condition with DD2 - I’m so sorry, I know extremely how uncomfortable it can be and how anxious it can make you about the baby. Mine was picked up early but the doctors all shrugged their shoulders and said there was nothing to be done. Thankfully, DD was fine. I weighed myself after my waters broke and had lost 3/4 of a stone already! After the birth it took a few years for the loose skin and stretch marks to lessen, but my body did recover. One more thing, I was already exhausted by the time I went into labour so accepted an induction on the condition I received an epidural first - best decision ever.

CountryMumof4 · 07/09/2025 00:27

I had the same with my second child. It was detected at 31 weeks so I had extra scans etc. but there's nothing medics can do to alleviate it. I had an induction at 37 weeks, but that was partially due to the fact that they correctly suspected my son would need additional support when he was born (not because of the extra fluid, but because of a genetic condition - although the condition can result in the extra fluid).

Stretch marks can appear during any pregnancy and they do fade. I have a pouch with stretch marks from my pregnancies and two sections, which I was sad about at first. I'm now simply proud of my body and view it as part and parcel of bringing my children into the world. I do understand how the changes in your body can affect your confidence, but try to relax and simply enjoy your child when they arrive. Hope all goes well for you x

Merryoldgoat · 07/09/2025 00:32

But nothing can be done about polyhydramnios. Some people get it, most don’t.

I had it along with an enormous baby. I had a difficult pregnancy and was monitored to within an inch of my life. It was picked up fairly early. Literally nothing to be done.

workingitout1234 · 09/09/2025 04:50

Update: birth was very fast but waters only trickled in the end, 7lb baby at 37+2. No interventions needed but couldn’t use the birth center

Bio oil worked wonders for me. Use it on stretch marks.

neverwakeasleepingbaby · 09/09/2025 11:56

Congratulations OP! Glad all is well
