AIBU? Worried, Ecoli Dymchurch beach

Went to the seaside today with my family, noticed at the end of our trip it says ‘no swimming advised due to water quality’ on a tiny little sign…

I googled it and it says poor quality due to traces of Ecoli..

now I’m freaking? My kids played on the beach, the didn’t swim- but they washed their feet off in the water and stood in it / splashed a bit.

it says ‘no bathing’ which I assume is actual swimming,

I feel like a terrible mum! They had a great day…

now I’m terrified they’re going to be sick :(

AIBU to myself worrying? Is there a chance they won’t be poorly at all?

Website states not safe for bathing. Did they swallow any of the water when splashing about?

I live in SE and wouldn't take young kids to the seaside any more. I know that sounds alarmist but it's taken social scientists to pull them up on this so I don't trust their official figures. I know a few families who have had tummy bugs after going to beaches, paddling in rivers etc. Better not to until they are properly regulated in my opinion. Adults can possibly deal with the effects better but I wouldn't risk small kids these days. Wash them off and all clothes, keep an eye and keep them hydrated if they have tummy upsets.

Did you wash hands before eating?
Isn't it common knowledge that basically all the water in the uk is full of pollution now?
I live right next to water and cant believe how many people swim in it still.
They cant all always be sick otherwise they wouldn't keep doing it.
You may be lucky.

Try not worry. Surfers and swimmers are in this stuff a lot and are usually ok. Your kids just paddled. I’m sure all will be well!

myfavouritemutant · 06/09/2025 20:08

The thing is with swimming, which is what is advised against, it’s easy to swallow several big mouthfuls of water. I can’t imagine there would be much risk from a few small splashes. This wouldn’t worry me op. If

@MummaHud just a heads up I done the exact same thing the last week. Im now covered with blisters upon blisters with 3 days up hospital and they still have no clue after swabs, blood tests etc im wondering if it could be somthing to do with the sea? And I've just googled and they closed the new surf school there last month FML. Not suggesting ecoli on my feet but is this a possibility??? I had 7 different doctors/nurses look and they were all flummoxed! Tia

No. E.coli doesn't cause blisters.

Also medical professionals wouldn't be totally flummoxed by something as simple as E.coli.

Hand washing before eating and watch out for upset stomachs OP.

I used to swim a mile down the coast from Dymchurch but stopped when the water qualify deteriorated as I’m prone to ear infections. However, still a member of a couple of sea swimming FB groups, some members still swimming daily. I’ve not seen any reports of illness.
Hopefully, the dc will be fine.
i adore the sea but won’t swim off Kent anymore.

Buzyizzy217 · 06/09/2025 21:07

If you look at the Surfers Against Sewage app, you’ll see very few of the Kent beaches are ok. We’ve also had it in our rivers and yet people have gone canoeing with no ill effects. Hopefully they’ll be ok. I think E. coli is pretty much in all our water now, but in minuscule amounts. KCC maybe just covering their backsides. 🙂

It is truly unforgivable what the Tories did to our country. How is nobody in jail for this???

Absolutely. It's another brexit bonus (not to get political). But am old enough to remember UK sea and rivers being disgusting when I was a child. (I lived in Brighton then and the last time I swam there was when I saw a sanitary towel float past my face.) The EU basically made us clean it all up! It's mad that any country wants to be so disrespectful to our nature and it's people because of profit.
