To not go on holiday because it's raining all week?

UK caravan holiday predicted rain every single day. Obviously I knew there was a chance the weather wouldn't be great but was hoping for a few dry days at least.
It's only a cheap caravan holiday (what we can afford) and we have a 3 year old and 7 month old.
Involves a lot of packing with two young children and it's a 5 hour drive.
We would definitely be going if the weather looked nicer .
My 3 year old is very energetic and needs a lot of running around/outdoor time. Baby doesn't sleep well in travel cot. We were planning more outdoor (free) things and not to be going to soft plays etc, although there is free swimming and soft play at the caravan site.

If we stayed home we'd do a couple of days out locally and also crack on with some house projects that really are desperate to be done so the time wouldn't be wasted.
We would obviously lose the money we paid for the holiday.
What would you do?
please no snide remarks that "you have to expect rain on UK Holiday etc" I do know that.... it's just predicted horrendous rain for the full week and stuck in a caravan with a baby and toddler without home comforts doesn't sound very fun haha.

Aww I hope you have a lovely time. It's always hard getting anywhere with kids and especially if you've had a bad experience before. But I hope you have a great time 😊

Alacartemenu · 06/09/2025 23:00

You have to let us know how it went!

Julimia · 07/09/2025 10:14

That's what's called 'having a positive attitude' just fab !

Atina321 · 07/09/2025 11:09

No such thing as bad weather, just poor clothing choices.

Pack wellies, raincoats etc and go out

GotMarriedInCornwall · 07/09/2025 11:10

Currently sat looking out of my Cornish window and the weather is atrocious, but kids don’t care. One of my favourite photographs is of my daughter and some of her friends at about 3 years old absolutely piss wet through with massive smiles on their faces because they’d had such a good time running around in the rain.
Bring waterproofs and go out and explore.
It isn’t particularly cold, just wet and windy so as long as you’re dressed appropriately you will be fine.
Make sure you visit Newquay Zoo - it’s lovely there.

Maddy70 · 07/09/2025 11:36

Just go. It's going to rain at home as well. It's change of scenery at least.

Thesunisfinallyshining · 07/09/2025 11:41

The weather map showing rainfall looks like there are lots of little pockets of showers about but no big band of rain to hit. So hopefully you’ll get some dry periods too!

Holidayqueen10 · 07/09/2025 11:47

We've just arrived at Hendra in Newquay, yes its raining buttt we're dodging the rain, soft play, arcades, swimming, dancing.

Coffeeismyfriend1 · 07/09/2025 16:15

Pack wellies and waterproofs and go have fun. My kids love splashing around in puddles, we’ve even been on the beach in the rain (in wellies and waterproofs)

You may find it doesn’t rain solidly all day, everyday. If it’s raining for a few hours you have the softplay and the pool, if it’s not raining you can do outdoor things.

CornishTiger · 07/09/2025 16:46

It was shocking first thing but it’s been dry since.

Lifelover16 · 07/09/2025 16:56

Don’t go.
Having been on caravan holidays in rainy weather with toddlers, I found it such hard work - more or less what you do on rainy days at home but without home comforts.
I’d stay at home and have some nice days out x

Bulbsbulbsbulbs · 07/09/2025 18:00

Cornwall weather forecast is often wrong. It's because of the sea- it can change very quickly.

I've just been for a lovely walk in the sunshine.by the sea. The weather forecast says it should be raining! As someone else said if it rains on the north coast the south will usually be better and vice versa.

SurreyisSunny · 07/09/2025 18:24

100% go

weather forecasts are rarely accurate. I was recently due to go camping for a long weekend with friends. I had to cancel due to a bad knee however several others obviously cancelled due to the forecast. In the end those that went had glorious sunshine and just one day of rain

if the weathers awful come home. If you stay home all week you’ll still be surrounded by the housework and so on so won’t relax

Chinsupmeloves · 07/09/2025 18:28

I would still go, the change of scenery and new area gives you a boost.

We went on a caravan holiday couple of weeks ago and it rained a lot but still had a brilliant time.

ellyeth · 07/09/2025 18:47

The five hour drive would rather put me off but I think I would still go. Take things to keep the children amused. I don't know where the caravan is located but surely there are indoor things you can do?

Having said that, we recently went on holiday and the weather for the first three days was damp, misty, rainy and dull. It was very off-putting and we were thinking of returning home. However, the weather picked up after that - we had some sunny spells and the area we were in was lovely. We enjoyed the last few days.

If it is really dire, you can always return home. The 5 hours is a bit of a slog but at least you will have given it a go.

GiveDogBone · 07/09/2025 18:48

It’s extremely unlikely to rain for 24h per day for 7 days. In fact last week the forecast said rain all week, and by Weds afternoon it was basically sunny and dry until now.

Just be flexible and keep a close eye on the weather. When the weather breaks for the better, out you go.

Squishydishy · 07/09/2025 18:51

I would go. We’ve just done eurocamp in Brittany and it was forecast rain for 10 days but actually it’s been 4 days of rain 2 of mixed and 4 of sun!! It changed the forecast while we were here

Mackerelfillets · 07/09/2025 19:14

Def go. You can always come back early if it really is truly awful.

Cherryicecreamx · 07/09/2025 19:20

I would say go because it's still a change of scenery and things to do! The 5 hr drive would be putting me off with young kids but that's regardless of the weather 😅

Pinkclouds80 · 07/09/2025 19:51

Going against the grain here, but from experience it will potentially be hell on earth and you’ll spend tons of extra money trying to have a nice time on meals out and activities that your baby will be oblivious to.

People saying “catch raindrops on your tongue” and “jump in muddy puddles” have forgotten or don’t realise that this will fill less than one hour of time, and you’ll be trying to keep everyone comfortable and cleaned up in a tiny space with no real access to playgrounds, seaside, children’s farms etc. you’ll end up booking shitty softplay and swimming sessions in a random town probably less nice than where you live (if you are me in 2019 🤣).

Sell it on Facebook marketplace and get some money back and do NOT be made to feel like a cop out or a wimp for just calling it and doing something else….if they aren’t the ones who are going to be trying to fill all those hours in a confined space after packing up the entire world and missioning it for hours in the car with a toddler and a baby….they can STFU! Lie and say you got a refund or sold it for full price if you don’t want earache about wasting money.

very best of luck whatever you decide xx

MaddestGranny · 07/09/2025 19:55

dear @Squishydishy, I was just going to recommend Eurocamp. For anyone who's in reasonable driving distance of the South Coast, then ferry or Eurotunnel to France and a Eurocamp holiday is a wonderful option for families with children. Much cheaper than Centre Parcs. DH, DD and I Eurocamped in Brittany & S.France from when DD was 8 till she made her own late-teen choices. We carried on Eurocamping till shortly before DH died. Many happy memories.

Allthingspeaches · 07/09/2025 20:04

I’d go, with puddle suits and wellies for when it’s lightly raining and back indoors for the storms. There will be dry moments (I hope!).

Jiski · 07/09/2025 21:52

There’s always dry time in a day. It won’t always be wet. There’ll be indoor things to do.

if it’s a Parkdean etc there’s swimming and sometimes other stuff on site.

Make the most of it and it’ll be great

Jumpers4goalposts · 08/09/2025 06:41

Enjoy your holiday. With Cornwall I it’s always worth checking the weather apps as I often find if it’s raining on the north coast is sunny on the south and visa versa. Also around here the weather apps have said rain every day but reality has been short showers.

Hidihisew · 08/09/2025 09:03

Take raincoats and wellies, kids will love it
