Insurance claim months after the incident

I’m a new driver and accidentally clipped the wing mirror of a parked car back in June, causing some visible damage. I pulled over and left a note on the windscreen apologising and providing my details.
To my relief, the owner of the car texted me, thanking me for stopping and saying that, as the damage seemed to be minimal, he was happy to forget about it, as these things happen.
Fast forward two months, and he’s been back in touch to say that there was in fact damage that needs repairing. He told me he’d been quoted £150 for the repair. I replied, offering to pay the £150 to avoid claiming on insurance and he initially agreed to this, before changing his mind and saying that he’d feel more comfortable going through insurers.
While I don’t have an issue with this in principal, it all just seems a bit strange and has left me worrying that I’ll now be in trouble for not reporting the incident at the time. As a new driver, I absolutely would have reported this straight away, had he not assured me that it was all fine. I’m also wondering if he will even be able to claim now, given that such a long time has passed and he failed to report it too.
Any advice would be appreciated. I feel like such an idiot for not reporting it to my insurers at the time. 😔

It's not a big deal. Just let insurers know and put a claim in since the people of the car you hit were ok about it then they weren't. You don't want to pay out of pocket and more expenses come through due to change of mind, workmanship etc.
