University proof of funds

Probably the wrong category however I’m trying to find a way to help my friend… has a working visa in the uk (sponsored by care home) she’s from Zimbabwe. Her daughter who is currently studying engineering in Zim has been accepted to do masters at a university in the UK however she must show that she had 20k in her bank account besides the deposit (daughter will get a student visa). My friend works to make ends meet so won’t have money to put towards 20k. She can’t loan from bank as she’s not a permanent resident/citizen and only needs to borrow the money actually so it can reflect in her account (a month). She doesn’t have wealthy friends. Any ideas (legal) please? What an opportunity to potentially lose. Thank u

So you're trying to get round the criteria for her to "have" 20k in the bank?

If she doesn't have the 20k she doesn't meet the criteria to do a masters in the UK? That 20k is to support herself while studying?

GCAcademic · 05/09/2025 22:22

Are you wanting someone to send you £20k, OP? 😂

Longingdreamer · 05/09/2025 22:22

If she doesn't have the money how will she pay her course fees and living expenses?

Also it's not wise to post about committing visa fraud

caringcarer · 05/09/2025 22:23

If she doesn't actually have the cash how can she pay for the Master's and to support herself whilst in the UK?

YanTanTetheraPetheraBumfitt · 05/09/2025 22:24

If she doesn’t have 20k how is she expecting to support herself once she’s here? What if she can’t get a part time job here?

bizzare · 05/09/2025 22:47

Pretending to have the money and then ending up in the UK and not being able to support yourself is not a good idea.

titchy · 05/09/2025 23:30

It’ll cost at least £25k (£15k fees and £10k maintenance) - if she’s struggling to get £20k in her bank account for a month how the hell
is she anticipating getting £25k to cover a year’s costs?

murasaki · 05/09/2025 23:39

Shed only be able to work 20 hours a week while here as an overseas student. This isn't going to work. Can she even afford the fees?

cestlavielife · 05/09/2025 23:43

That s the rule.
Maybe she can do masters in Zimbabwe then get a job then apply fir job in UK and get sponsored?

HostaCentral · 05/09/2025 23:46

Even UK students need to provide evidence of this for a masters. You need to confirm you can cover living expenses as well as the fees. Isn't a masters about £30k for an International student?

LesleyA · 06/09/2025 14:49

Thanks everyone so her daughter will get a job and work part time to afford her studies which her mum will also work to pay for month by month they just dont have the savings of 20k upfront. So what then?

She doesn’t come. The need for funds - which many countries put in place - is to make sure she can legally support herself. If she doesn’t have it then she’ll have to study elsewhere.
I studied in US and had to prove I had the money upfront to support myself.

She can't come, unfortunately.

She can do her Masters in Zimbabwe and then move when she has her degree and a job, if she wants.

LesleyA · 06/09/2025 14:57

She’s also so going to be living at home and near the university so minimal living cost.

It doesn't matter, she has to follow the rules like everyone else. I'm not saying it's fair, necessarily, but she has no choice.

YanTanTetheraPetheraBumfitt · 06/09/2025 14:59

I don’t think there’s any way round it. Can she defer for a year and they both work and save up and then she comes in a year’s time?

mamagogo1 · 06/09/2025 15:00

Fees are payable before term starts usually so working won’t work. I suggest she needs to find a sponsor

Zanatdy · 06/09/2025 15:00

She can’t meet the terms of the visa, so why apply?

Slabberon · 06/09/2025 15:00

LesleyA · 06/09/2025 14:57

She’s also so going to be living at home and near the university so minimal living cost.

That’s irrelevant- she needs to prove she has enough to support herself as an independent adult and isn’t planning on staying in the U.K., working illegally in anyway outside what her visa allows and is planning on leaving or applying for a legal way to stay once she’s finished her course.

DiscoBob · 06/09/2025 15:02

Well nobody is going to be foolish enough to lend her it, as she has no means of paying it back. It's dishonest to try and bend the rules. If you don't qualify to come live here then you don't come. Unless you want to be a small boat statistic.

You can lend her it but I wouldn't advise it. Or she can ask family but even then it's obvious that she simply doesn't have those funds and never will.

Slabberon · 06/09/2025 15:04

£20k suddenly arriving in a bank acct will raise suspicion too… can she get a guarantor?

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 06/09/2025 15:06

They will want bank statements for proof of funds. No one is going to think that a lump sum of £20k magically appearing in her bank account is anything other than suspicious.

SummerFeverVenice · 06/09/2025 15:13

Has she tried getting a student loan from Zimbabwe?
https://studentfunding.ukzn.ac.za/loans-for-zimbabwe-student/

Educate Unischolar Plan:

  • Response on the application within 12hrs of submission of all relevant documents.
  • The loan covers tuition, accommodation, cost of books and foreign student levy
  • University study fees are paid directly to the university on your behalf
  • Reserve Bank Declaration completed on your behalf
  • Repayment of the loan over 5/10 monthly installments
  • No account opening required
  • No physical asset required as collateral
  • The easy loan renewal process

My DC have US citizenship and one just used a US student loan to pay for a Masters abroad in another European country as the UK graduate student loan can only be used for Universities within the UK

bigwhitedog · 06/09/2025 15:15

You're asking for ideas to commit immigration fraud. Unfortunately if she can't meet the terms of her visa, she can't come.

unsurewhattodoaboutit · 06/09/2025 15:15

But is she allowed to get a job on that study visa? Hence why they need proof of funds! This is why there are people putting those horrendous flags everywhere!
