To think there’s something a bit sinister about the Government Emergency Alert test on 7th September?

I know it’s being pitched as just a routine safety check, “nothing to worry about” but I can’t help but feel uneasy. Why now? Why the sudden push to roll this out and get everyone’s phones buzzing at the same time?
Is it really just a public safety measure or could there be something more going on here - surveillance, control, a soft rollout of something bigger?

AIBU to feel suspicious… or do others get the same vibe?

Being concerned about the government's ability to override your phone without your consent is funny to you? I bet you think implementing digital ID systems or the Online Harms Bill are fantastic ideas, too. 🙄

Its no more overriding your phone than school texts to all parents.

Alarm testing is the least of your worries if you're concerned about your phone spying on you.🙈

Yes - if people want to worry about being controlled or their phones tracking them, all they need to do is to think about where their phones and other devices are manufactured. 😂

KeepYaHeadUp · 07/09/2025 23:57

It’s emergency planning.

I do wonder why people are suspicious of a very routine test but happily sign up to meta / x etc and don’t give two hoots about the privacy and surveillance implications of that

I feel in 2 minds about this so a bit torn ( as I do NOT trust the government or the billionaires like Elon Musk )

I would WANT a warning if there was a war or flood etc , in order to protect my children and get my preparations into action ( Yes I AM preparing! )

I do NOT trust the digital systems like the new 'Brit Card' , hand microchip implants , BRAIN microchip implants , AI and yes how it can spy on us etc

Just want to be safe and prepared as I may be the minority who ''sense'' something BAD is coming and want to be prepared for my family , so I can accept being called a nut PLUS making sure I KEEP CASH and a fair amount of it in a safe place for when we cannot use our cards , as those mocking MAY see sense to late and I would RATHER be prepared than NOT prepared , in all honesty!

VenerableFreed · 08/09/2025 11:21

How exactly does it “override my phone”? Do the multiple spam text messages I get daily “override my phone”?

Also, I’m fairly sure the government could access and read pretty much your entire phone if they chose to do so, not to mention the private companies who harvest tons of our data every single day.

If you want complete privacy, don’t have a phone (or don’t do anything “private” on it).

Ginmonkeyagain · 08/09/2025 11:27

The message is broadcast from mobile masts and all phones in range pick it up - it's not sent to your personal phone. That is clear as you can also get these messages abroad (I got my first one when I was in Germany).

Oh God, you are so absurdly stupid. Talk about the point going over your head.

You throwing your toys out of the pram because we're not instantly agreeing with your rabid conspiracy theories is not helping your cause.

What nonsense is this?

Dayrose · 08/09/2025 16:11

The banks already went down on 5th Sept , my neighbour was left stranded with no petrol

I think it's WISE to be prepared but YOU can think what you want and call it nonsense until it HAPPENS!!

What have brain implants got to do with no petrol?

There's a delicious irony about someone stating they don't trust digital systems while being on the internet.

No one tell her about Dihydrogen monoxide.

Have you seen what it does to rocks?!

Binglebong · 08/09/2025 19:55

I'm assuming you meant Dihydrogen oxide BTW.

Dihydrogen monoxide is correct according to molecular naming conventions.
