That this has knocked my confidence ?

If a precious colleague was messaging me and she said that I was ‘under appreciated’ at the job. This has knocked my confidence a bit going into my new job that I’m not good enough. I know it was meant to be a compliment from her saying I should have been more appreciated but it’s got me thinking that maybe others thought I wasn’t good enough

I think it means more that you were overlooked than that you weren't good enough. That you got on with your job without making a song and dance of it and did it well, but people took you for granted.

It may be something to consider in your new job - how you can build your profile and be better recognised, if that's what you want.

That's literally not what it means though 😵‍💫

Honestly, I think you have completely misinterpreted what she said. It was a compliment.

Tropizienne · 05/09/2025 20:16

It’s the polar opposite & a compliment OP! Feel the opposite if you can!

It was a compliment

NavyNorris · 05/09/2025 20:20

Oh don't let it knock your confidence. It's a compliment.

Basically sounds like you were too good for the other place you were working and they didn't appreciate you nearly as much as they should have.

Definitely does not mean anyone thinks you're not good enough. It's actually lovely to know colleagues think this way about you, enjoy the compliment 😊

Its amazing how good our minds are at turning nice things into bad things. Enjoy the new job and practice being kind to yourself.

I'm worried because I don't have anything to worry about.

Starting at a new job is always nerve wracking.

However, she actually meant the opposite to what you thought, and that you were good at your job. I’m guessing you’re one of those people who quietly just gets on with your job, tackle problems head on without making a fuss, and provides good support to others.

It means you were good but your managers didn’t recognise that

JMSA · 06/09/2025 07:57

Sorry but you have confidence issues anyway, if this is how you’re taking that comment.

the colleague who messaged me was the supervisor.

Thanks everyone. I know it was a compliment for her, but it just got me thinking what others thought.
