Facebook sperm donation

I keep seeing a public group on Facebook that I'm not part of, and it's about seeking sperm donors from the group to start families. AIBU to be really weirded out by the fact people use social media for this instead of the correct clinical avenues? There's thousands of people in this group, there's no health and genetic checks done, and I'm wondering if it's bordering on illegal to sell your sperm like that? A lot of the people looking haven't even been in a relationship long and are only very young.

Fully expecting to be told I'm a horrible person, but surely I can't be the only one who has seen this group and thought it's very dodgy?

Possibly outing but my friend went via a website of similar ilk. She showed me it and it was, I assume, a bit like a dating website with profiles for those looking for donors and those wanting to donate.
It worked out well for her and she has 2 kids via the same donor but I can imagine there are some dodgy characters on there. They also didn't have checks etc. I assume it isn't illegal as everyone has consented?

I believe it's illegal in the UK, but not in the USA to sell sperm.

That beings said it probably does happen, and I don't suppose the police are that interested in a willing seller willing buyer transaction.

Its not illegal as such because your not paying them, your paying for their accommodation not their sperm so its not illegal. People cant afford clinics thats why they use different websites or groups.

There is a scary and dangerous “black market” so to speak of non-traditional baby making, and not only is it unsafe for women but it’s deeply unethical and horrific that people are willing to involve children in this mess all for a quick buck.

Familystar · 31/12/2025 10:27

Please do your research there are people who have hundreds of donor kids and thats not fair on all the children.

Make sure it's not provided by 'Joe Donor'. He has a history of bringing court cases to try and gain access to some of the children he's fathered. Repulsive man.

Then there's that bloke on Netflix who's fathered at least 1000 kids all over the world via sperms donation - much of it through legitimate clinics!

There are 4 big problems that I can think of off the top of my head:-

  1. No checking the sperm for STDs putting mother and baby at risk
  2. No checking the donor for genetic issues putting baby at risk (not sure how well this is done anyway)
  3. With no legal agreement that this is a donation the donor is actually the father so can apply for access etc
  4. With no legal agreement that this is a donation the donor is actually the father and so the mother can claim child support.

In other words it is a mess!

That Jo Donor is some scary reading! Why is he suddenly interested in getting unsupervised access to the girl children?!

x2boys · 31/12/2025 11:05

There was/ is a documentary on Netflix about a guy who had fathered 1000+ babies i think he was from Sweden?
These children are all over the world .

TheRozzers · 31/12/2025 11:06

YANBU however my children were conceived via sperm donation. We went through all the correct avenues and used a licensed clinic but it turns out they have a very rare genetic condition that is life threatening that they inherited from the donor. Sperm banks tests for common hereditary conditions such as cystic fibrosis etc but they don’t run full genetic screening for absolutely everything.

Using this new Facebook service is the same risk as having a baby with any random man.

I’m so old I remember posters up in the Student Union building offering money for sperm donation unless it was some sort of weird fever dream. I’m pretty sure I saw them in the early 1990’s.
