To not understand how I didn't realise that having new carpets fitted would be such hard work !tted

The moving all the furniture out and still being able to walk down the hall , finding places for everything .
Admittedly I did choose to remove the old carpet which obviously added to the work load .
I'm glad I did though because it meant I could thoroughly clean up all the dust , powdered foam backing and general mess.
How do others manage?

You just ...make do for a bit? Only move the furniture out the morning of/night before the new carpet. Put a picnic rug down and tell the kids it's exciting. 😆

I feel your pain!

We just finished redecorating our bedroom two weeks ago and had a new carpet fitted afterwards. We had to find somewhere to put the wardrobe, two chests of drawers, two bedside tables, a tall mirror, a bookcase and all the books and various other stuff. Thank goodness I had already done a fair bit of decluttering.

There are now just two of us in a four bedroom house, otherwise I don't know how we would have managed. Two of the other bedrooms and the landing were full of furniture. There was nowhere to move the bedframe to so the fitters just had to work around it.

I can see why we put it off so long but worth it now it's done.

Ilovemyshed · 05/09/2025 10:56

We did MILs house once. I worked with the fitter in advance to plan the order of rooms and we moved furniture from room to room as needed on the day. Bloomin hard work.

Daleksatemyshed · 05/09/2025 11:07

I really need to recarpet the living room but can't face it yet Op so I know what you mean.

When you say you moved the furniture out, do you mean outside the house? Also you don't mention anyone else helping, did you do it alone?

I'm asking as I live alone and just don't know how to cope when I get my carpets done. I took down the attic hatch to repaint and even that's too heavy for me to lift back up.

In my town there used to be a service from a storage company I'd definitely use if still available. It was a towed canvas sided unit, like a single horse box. They'd park it outside your house and either they or yourself filled it and they'd pick it up after job done.

Ineedpeaceandquiet · 05/09/2025 11:12

No good deed goes unpunished 😉

PandoraSocks · 05/09/2025 11:15

The carpet shop I use do all the furniture wrangling. They are ace.❤️

roses2 · 05/09/2025 11:15

I don't understand why carpet fitting companies make it so difficult - they want you to remove beds, wardobes, tables etc and refuse to work around the furniture and move themselves.

If they offered this service I would:

  1. Pay more for fitting and
  2. Get carpets changed more frequently

Surely they would make more money this way - I am baffled why most don't offer this.

AphroditesSeashell · 05/09/2025 11:19

About 8 years ago I got new carpets in the hall/stairs and all 3 bedrooms upstairs. Organised the fitter to come and do it all in one day.

It's the hardest thing I've ever had to do; moving three bedroom worth of furniture, clothes, knick knacks etc all downstairs so the rooms were as clear as possible. Then lifting all the old carpets and underlay and moving it to the car in several trips and then onward to the dump.

I wasn't able to move my (emptied) wardrobe to get the carpet out from under it so had to use a stanley knife to cut round it and apologised profusely to the man that I hadn't been able to sort it all. He was so kind and was clearly baffled that I'd did all this completely on my own - I was a shadow of a person by the time he arrived 😅

...and then I had to move it all back once they were fitted!!

It's left me scarred - I am overdue new carpets now and can't bring myself to do it again!

BethBynnag86 · 05/09/2025 11:30

We're having our bedroom recarpeted next week. It's something we've been putting off and off for the same reason. We've finally decided to do it though, and Tapi, who we've arranged it all through, will have their fitters work around the wardrobe and chest of drawers as long as they're both empty, and will do the same with the bed if we can move the mattress out of the way.

We've just started the process of moving everything else out into the spare bedroom which is also a double in size, but some stuff will have to go downstairs too in the meantime. All the clothes in the wardrobe will have to be laid out on the spare bed.

I'm using this opportunity to tidy up the paintwork on the skirting boards.I can pull the old carpet back without worrying about it and without being too concerned about where the paint goes!

Top tip; chances are that the fitters might need to take a door off. They won"t put it back on!This is something we hadn't factored in last time we had any carpets fitted a couple of years ago. This time,I've given our carpenter the heads-up,and he said he'll call round after they've been if necessary,to plane and re-hang.

limetrees32 · 05/09/2025 11:36

Yes, I've done it on my own .

Courage @PiggyPigalle ,it is possible .
It took me several days .

Lots of thinking .

I used these DIY Doctor - The Original Deluxe Super Sliders - Furniture Sliders For Carpet - Furniture Movers - Furniture Sliders For Wooden Floors - Appliance Sliders - Gliders For Furniture : Amazon.co.uk: DIY & Tools https://share.google/t1towHxvOYvRxgyes
they really do make it easy to move chairs, wardrobes etc .
If you have somewhere to move them to of course.
I emptied everything first .
Cheap hanging rails from Amazon.
Do you have a local forum ,Next Door or something .
Could you pay a young able bodied teen looking for a little extra spending money?
Have only one room done at a time.
I used a local ( SE London ) firm .
For a reasonable fee they will take carpet up and also dispose of if you want them to .
They charged £10 an item for furniture left in the room and they move it from side to side.
I left a bed in one room and a sofa in another.
I did take the carpet up myself ,I cut it into strips which I rolled up into manageable portions and used gaffer tape to secure the rolls.

That is just the most fabulous solution.
Wonder if they still do it ?
I moved stuff mainly into the corridor, luckily they are quite wide.

We really need a new carpet in our bedroom but I just can’t face the upheaval. All the furniture is free standing and all will have to be moved. The bed will have to be dismantled and I don’t even know how to do it!

Sera1989 · 05/09/2025 11:46

I also removed all my own carpets to save hundreds and I remember not being prepared for how much work (and dust) it was! Soo many nails, especially on the stairs, and carpet is much heavier than I thought it'd be! It's one of those things that sounds easy enough until you do it for the first time. I don't have all that much furniture at the moment but used to have a kitchen-diner with a bookcase and display cabinet of decorative things etc. Took a full day to move everything from one room - probably why I now own fewer things!

Chompingatthebeat · 05/09/2025 11:47

What does !tted mean?

limetrees32 · 05/09/2025 11:47

I think of you can move the other stuff out they should be able to sniff the bed around while working .
They could take the mattress off to make it lighter.
Honestly ask in some carpet shops . They more I think about it , these must be such common problems which I'm sure they are used to solving .

We are desperate for a bedroom carpet, I can't bring myself to move everything out, its literally an ottoman bed and 2 chest of drawers but still, theres no where to move them to upstairs so they would need to go downstairs

I have 2 other bedrooms which need the carpet replacing which I actually have at my parents, but again its moving everything out, I just don't know where to start - if only there was a service for this!

limetrees32 · 05/09/2025 11:50

@Chompingatthebeat sorry, I retyped the title before posting and didn't completely delete what I'd originally typed.
So it's the end of fitted preceded by the exclamation mark.

I'm so pleased I found this thread today and it's such a coincidence as I'm having my lounge done next week and am currently in the process of emptying sideboard, wall unit etc I live in a tiny house with dh who is disabled so can't really help, hence it all falling on me. It's like moving house again, packing everything up. I've been lucky enough to find a fitter who is happy to take up and dispose of the old carpet, move the furniture that I can't fit into the kitchen and shave anything needed off the internal doors. He's actually very reasonably priced so I'll be giving him a big tip on the day. I'm so desperate for a new carpet I keep telling myself all this hassle will be worth it in the end!

Fraudornot · 05/09/2025 11:55

Can anyone tell me if we have ikea fitted wardrobes along one wall of the bedroom do we have to dismantle them for a new carpet? Worried they won’t go back together again!

Nearly50omg · 05/09/2025 11:57

It’s not brain surgery moving some furniture out of a room, cleaning it and then once the new carpet goes in moving the furniture back! It’s also not something your do more than when you move house or every 10 years on average 🤷‍♀️🤣

limetrees32 · 05/09/2025 11:58

@theressomanytinafeysicouldbe can you not get the two chests of drawers into another bedroom ?
Even if they block a door/window or something .
It's only for a short time.

OP posts:
limetrees32 · 05/09/2025 12:03

@Nearly50omg no it's not brain surgery, you don't have to be clever.
But it is hard work.
And so much depends on how much and how large your furniture is and whether there is somewhere for it to go .
And whether you can afford to pay for the removal and disposal of old carpet.

That assumes that you a) have room somewhere to move the furniture to and b) that you have people around who can help.

I need a new living room carpet. Absolutely no way I can move either my sofa or sideboard, so I’m just putting up with the one I have.

tellyon · 05/09/2025 12:05

So what I did was, paid them £200 to do all the furniture moving, went on holiday leaving keys in a lock safe and came back to it all done.
