AIBU to wonder what on earth kids are being taught in schools these days??

So context; my DS (13 m) loves diet coke. He is not normally allowed fizzy drinks but I make an exception for meals out, cinema etc. Diet coke is a treasured substance for him and what he doesn't finish he usually tries to bring home. He went to the movies with DH yesterday and unknown to me came home with a huuuge coke.

This morning he is grouchy and wants to use the microwave (he has to ask because he has a track record of causing accidental explosions). I ask why? He shows me the precious coke and it is frozen solid, like the godzilla of popsicles. He wants to use the microwave to melt it. Again, I ask why? His response:

So that the ice cubes wouldn't melt.

I know that states of matter were covered in chemistry this year and he takes food tech and they also covered the water cycle in geography. He gets pretty good grades in all three subjects and he has no special needs apart from CSDD (common sense deficiency disorder- I just made it up but he has it).

AIBU to call his school and demand to know what he is even being taught in these lessons when, as a teenager, he doesn't understand that water freezes when you put it in the freezer???

AIBU to wonder what on earth kids are being taught in schools these days??

He wanted to use the microwave so the ice cubes wouldn't melt?

flumposie · 05/09/2025 08:40

Have you not explained this as a parent to him when he was little?

BreadRoll · 05/09/2025 08:41

No, he put it in the freezer overnight so the ice cubes wouldn't melt. Sorry, reading it back that wasn't very clear. I am just in shock.

I am sorry but that made me 😂😂😂😂😂

HoLeeFuk · 05/09/2025 08:41

No, he put it in the freezer ON so the ice cubes wouldn't melt.

I'm so confused

Fearfulsaints · 05/09/2025 08:42

He pit the microwave in the freezer?

Have you not explained this as a parent to him when he was little?

I discourage him from entering the kitchen and handling appliances. I know many mums will disagree with this parenting approach, but I fear for his safety and everyone elses.

Given how dire your explanation is, I think you need to go back to school!

You don’t even mention freezer in your original post.

Twistedfirestarters · 05/09/2025 08:44

Well the ice cubes didn't melt did they? 😂 Although how he's going to melt it in the microwave and preserve the ice cubes I have no idea

noworklifebalance · 05/09/2025 08:44

I don’t fully understand your post but things melting/solidifying are things parents taught and/or reinforced at home when children were infant school age through normal every day chat e.g. when having ice creams.

Ablondiebutagoody · 05/09/2025 08:45

If he thinks that heating it up in the microwave will keep the ice cubes frozen, school can't help him.

Northerngirl821 · 05/09/2025 08:45

He seems to be struggling with a basic understanding of physics and states of matter. I don’t think it’s entirely the school’s fault though - with thirty kids in a class they can’t always pick up every child that’s struggling. Did he tell the teacher he was having difficulty following the lessons?

I’d have a chat with the teacher and see if they can recommend some resources for you to help him catch up at home.

TheMAFSfan · 05/09/2025 08:45

Reminds me of the time my cousin brought ice cream home from a school trip, as a present for his mum. From New York…

Chobby · 05/09/2025 08:45

I don’t think this can be pinned on the school TBH.

mummypigoink · 05/09/2025 08:46

I bet Common Sense Deficiency Disorder is more common than Common Sense.

If that’s the case, is it that Common Sense is the disorder 🤔.

But yeah, it’s hilarious sometimes the things teenagers don’t realise.

Ladamesansmerci · 05/09/2025 08:47

I don't think this is school's fault 😂 I think it's common sense you learn at home about basic household appliances.

Twistedfirestarters · 05/09/2025 08:47

See now I'm confused by some of the responses.

I read it as he came home with the coke and ice cubes. He didn't want the ice cubes to melt so he put the whole drink in the freezer.

Now his drink is frozen solid - which he presumably didn't forsee happening - and he wants to melt it in the microwave.

TeenAssessment · 05/09/2025 08:48

So you won't let your child learn how basic kitchen appliances work at home under your supervision, but you will blame school that he doesn't know how said basic appliances work....???

Walkacrossthesand · 05/09/2025 08:48

His error was not computing that Diet Coke is mostly water and will therefore freeze. They’re unlikely to teach ‘composition of different substances’ as a specific thing. Not all things that are liquid at room temperature, are water based - cooking oils, for example. Not that we drink cooking oils, but you take my point. He probably wouldn’t expect milk to freeze, either - he will now! Learning experience…

Asweexpected · 05/09/2025 08:49

Nothing to do with school, he's just daft!

My ex grammar school, four A star, Alevel son commented in his first weeks at his top uni, that he had plenty of money.
When I questioned it he said ‘ yes, I have, because of the money the bank has given me’ - the overdraft! 😆

He didn't know he had to pay it back….😳

Well educated…just daft.

ThisIsHowWeDoItThisIsHowWeDoIt · 05/09/2025 08:50

She means that he put the whole cup of coke in the freezer because he wanted to drink it late because he isn’t allowed coke that often and he wanted the ice cubes to stay as ice cubes for the later enjoyment of the coke so he froze the whole drink. Then he wanted to drink it but the whole thing was frozen due to his fluff for brains. So he asked to use the microwave to defrost his drink because he has caused explosions with the microwave prior to this.

Shelllendyouhertoothbrushtoo · 05/09/2025 08:51

Oh god this is where they come from. Boys with mothers who won't let them in the kitchen to use appliances become the useless men we hear about on here. Please start teaching him how to use the oven/dishwasher/washing machine for the sake of womankind. You are priming him for weaponised incompetence.

Iocainepowder · 05/09/2025 08:51

Ah man i read the title of this thread and was prepared to rant about my dislike of lots of Shakespeare still being taught in schools.

wtf 😂

Thanks for all the people that did follow it and explained it.

I think this is something that is not really school learning, but home learning. Learning theory like states of matter is ok. But you need concrete experience in the home to learn from. So I am basically saying let him in the kitchen and make some mistakes.
