Bad UTI at night - what can I do? (Sorry post for traffic)

I’m sorry if I sound dramatic but I have strong symptoms and I genuinely don’t know what to do until I can see a Pharmacist/Gp.

It’s nearly 1am so I can’t exactly get any antibiotics yet and I have no painkillers in house or any of the other stuff recommended for uti’s like cranberry, d-mannose.

I have very strong feeling of needing to pee which is now consistent / very hard to ignore. I can’t imagine I’ll be able to sleep at all but even worse is I am in so much discomfort now I genuinely don’t know what to do.

When I go I barely pee and the first half of the short pee will feel like relief but the end/last few drops hurt much more.

no blood and no strong smell but this came on gradually this evening and I’ve noticed the more I pee without much actually coming out the worse my symptoms become. However it’s hard to distract myself to not pee every 10 mins

Where do you live? You really should get some paracetamol. any calpol in for the kids you can have some? can you get to a shop- or there are all night pharmacies. We are very rural so it would be 70 miles for us but if you live in a town you’ll have one nearer. The NHS website will help.

otherwise drink plenty of water, try a hot water bottle and hold tight until morning.

Things like cranberry aren’t recommended after symptoms start anyway, so don’t stress about that anyway.

I genuinely don’t think I’ll sleep at all and urge to pee is so strong currently, extremely hard to hold off peeing every 10 mins

Drink more water than your stomach can hold to water down the acid in your urine. Take 1/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda to also change the pH of your urine. Painkillers. Caffeine is a diuretic, as is cabbage. You want to be moving water through your bladder so don’t expect to sleep. And then drink more water again.

If you have blood in your urine, call for help.

Last time I had one i sat in a warm bath, it did ease it but I was also paracetamol . The pain was awful, you have my total sympathy. I'd definitely try and get some painkillers. Speak to 111 they could maybe organise something for the morning.

buffyfaithfredwesley · 05/09/2025 01:06

Try putting a hot water bottle between your legs, that’s helped me before

SinisterBumFacedCat · 05/09/2025 01:06

Vaseline on your vulva to ease the soreness and act as a barrier when you wee. Either hot water bottle or ice packs to numb the area.

I’ve started to pee a bit of blood this time so calling 111, thanks guys

Sit in a warm bath, it’s not glamorous at all but just sit there and wee as you feel you need to until you can see someone in the morning. It will stop the pain when you go. Keep drinking loads of water to dilute it too.

ThePure · 05/09/2025 03:38

I’d second
drinking a lot of water to flush it through
adding bicarbonate (tastes horrible though)

also suggest pouring warm water from a bottle front to back over the area as you pee as this lessens the pain similar to sitting in the warm bath.

Definitely agree 111 or even going to A&E or a walk in centre if starting to pee blood but the other stuff might help with symptoms even if just whilst waiting.

Is there a late night pharmacy near you? You could at least get some painkillers and if they have a pharmacist on duty you can get antibiotics. teen DD had her first ever bad UTI recently and it was lots easier to get antibiotics from the pharmacy than trying to book in with the GP so I’d suggest going straight to a pharmacy as soon as they open if no joy with other routes. You need to google one with ‘Pharmacy First’. It was so easy just rock up, chat with pharmacist and got meds straight away.

hope you are ok Op. I was a frequent UTI person until recently. I started taking D Mannose every day and I haven’t had one since. Might be worth a look once you have this one sorted. There is no discomfort like a UTI. Bastard things.

ldnflatshareNC · 05/09/2025 08:19

Thanks guys. Very grateful to the NHS I was able to collect antibiotics at 2am from local hospital as I didn’t feel well enough to wait

Will be looking into d-mannose after thanks was shocked how bad uti’s can get
