AIBU to not want my child vaccinated against hep B without an explanation? Since when was this a thing? I am not anti vaccine but out of the blue, myyear 7 has a consent form sentfor hep b vaccine. Not aware of any Public communications on a new vaccine regime. My year 10 had no such thing. Unless they have have got the vaccine name wrong?

I think it may be the HPV vaccine? Hep B not usually given to this age group

Igotupagain · 04/09/2025 21:43

Ok, it is a SEN thing. Still wierd. How many children in SEN bite or get bitten AND transmit or acquirehep B in the UK. Bonkers. What a huge sum of money for a highly unlikely event. Subject children with SEN who are typically vaccine adverse to 3 jabs for something that is low prevalence and treatable in the UK. Cripes, stop wasting our money.

School children are not mentioned on the hep B page on the NHS website.

Somemothersdoavem · 04/09/2025 21:44

That makes sense, unfortunately bites can cause hep b

JudithOnHolidayAgain · 04/09/2025 21:50

My dc has severe learning difficulties and attends a special school, all pupils are recommended to have hep b vaccine as well as staff. Dc coped ok with the jabs.....and has been bitten a few times in school!

All infants born since 2017 are immunised against Hep B as part of the standard UK childhood vaccination protocol.

BNF states
“Immunisation against hepatitis B is also recommended for individuals in high risk groups (those at high risk of exposure or those at risk of complications), as listed:
…..

  • staff and residents of homes for those with learning difficulties (consideration may also be given for those in day care, schools and centres for those with severe learning disability);”

Hugely excessive IMO. DC SEN school is not for severely challenging children (dyslexia, adhd, high functioning autism (aka Asperger’s). Children with very challenging behaviours such as biting are not enrolled. Must be a blanket SEN school offer. I think I should decline.

Don't consent then.
No money will be wasted because they aren't going to chuck the unused vaccine away are they?
They will just use it for someone else.

I agree but, the consent has been sent to whole school with very minimal explanation. Many will likely take it up. It is statistically unlikely in their educational setting. it is an expensive vaccine. Most likely a funding pot approved or a stash of excess stocks somewhere to use up before it expires and gets written off. Very happy to be convinced otherwise if anyone knows more?

Child will need a lot more needles should they contract Hep B at some point in their life. Personally I would go for the vaccine. Medical staff are used to dealing with fear of needles.

It’s a different scenario, but I’ve just forked out £440 for my twins to be vaccinated against Meningitis B before they go off to uni this autumn. Any offer if a free vaccination for something and I would definitely take it.

Why would you decline? Why not take up the offer if a free, potentially beneficial vaccine? What is the negative for you?

Not every thing is a conspiracy. It's a well known vaccine that could prevent your child from getting very ill. Either take or dont but spreading NHS conspiracies that they are using up old stashes is supporting fear mongering.

It’s now part of the standard jabs because it’s endemic in parts of the world and people travel. We were both vaccinated last year on recommendation of our gp for travel outside of Europe (think 5 star hotels not backpacking!) my DD’s were vaccinated as babies in USA over 20 years ago. It’s a low risk vaccine, why refuse?

Also good to know that the hep b vaccine lasts ten years.

You can choose not to take it up, no one is making you. I don't see why you would be upset if others do though.
