Parents taking school aged kids to a supermarket opening during school hours

My friend uploaded some photos onto FB attending a new supermarket opening where she lives. It’s a supermarket chain that they had before but moved to a bigger unit. She took her DS who only started school on Monday. There were other school aged children in the background.

Supermarket opened at 10am, not the normal time which is 7am or 8am from now on.

Isn’t it pathetic that parents made their kids skip school for attending opening a new supermarket? Especially at the start of the school year. It’s pathetic any time of the year. I don’t think they got anything such as free stuff, coupons etc.

My friend did not send her DS (6) back to school as later on a photo of him in McDs.

Most schools would have had an INSET day on Monday. Our children didn't start till Wednesday. And independent schools tend to have longer holidays than state schools. You are being ridiculous.

Stop asking the OP why she cares. If no one cared about anything, the threads on here would be very boring.

Amen to that. I doubt the OP has been up all night thinking about it, or is going to change the course of her life over it. Some people seem to think that the MN forum is the online equivalent of the United Nations, where only the weightiest matters of the day are to be discussed. Bothering to attend the opening of a supermarket of your own volition is a bit weird. Taking your kids out of school to do so is really weird and I would pass comment if I thought somebody I knew had done that. However given that other kids were also in attendance it does seem likely that either a) their school wasn't back in, or b) it was a school outing.

Endofyear · 05/09/2025 07:22

They're not your kids so why do you care?

Mumtobabyhavoc · 05/09/2025 07:50

Not your kid. So, what?

Peacepleaselouise · 05/09/2025 07:52

I’d assume it’s an inset day or private school dates or settling in for reception or possibly home educated or SEN kids who don’t have a school place. I really can’t imagine anyone keeping their child off school to go to a supermarket opening.

HelpMeGetThrough · 05/09/2025 07:54

Couldn’t give a toss if parents take their kids out of school for something, it’s their decision and nothing to do with me.

You're not asking AIBU, you've put this on here to stir up the pitchforkers so you can have a good old self righteous party.

Your use of 'pathetic' twice shows that. Keep your nose out and find something else to worry about.

My grandson is in year 3, and started back at school on Monday for the full day this week, but just half the class. The other half went in on Tuesday for the full day and then they are all in together from Wednesday.

Laserwho · 05/09/2025 09:40

There are lots of reasons why school aged children aren't in school this week. In my area alone some schools went back on Monday, some schools are only just going back today. As someone else said schools are often invited to these events.

MrsSkylerWhite · 05/09/2025 09:43

Just ask her 🤷‍♀️

Wishimaywishimight · 05/09/2025 09:53

What's "pathetic" is you judging people for something pretty harmless - I mean, so what?

Wow that’s bad luck right at the begining of term

Yep and with a brand new headteacher!

zingally · 05/09/2025 10:57

Not all schools started back on the same day. My 2 started back on Wednesday. One of the neighbours kids went on Tuesday, their other went on Thursday.

That being said, I'm often surprised by obviously school-age kids being out and about on a school day.
Back before the summer holidays, I popped into Starbucks, mid-morning, and there was a mum with two kids aged about 9 and 12, having leisurely drinks and cakes.
I just had to assume they were perhaps homeschooled?

Anyone else thinking of the brilliant Timothy Dalton as the somerfields manager in Hot Fuzz? Can imagine him holding a grand opening 😁

Bedtelly · 05/09/2025 11:07

Stop stalking your friend on social media and judging her you weirdo.

Was it Aldi Market Harborough? Only saying that as the whole town seems to have got ridiculously excited about the new Aldi so I can well believe people have taken their kids out of school!

Yes! A primary school was invited to open it. But other pupils from other schools attended with their parents! Such as my friend

She’s not your friend though, is she? I couldn’t give a shiny shit what my friends do with their kids. Not sure why you feel it’s ok to call your friend pathetic?

A girl in my daughters class was kept off to go to the opening of a new Primark
