To expect a hairdresser to take debit& credit cards???

Or at least tell people when they call to make an appointment that they don't?

Had an appointment yesterday and on paying was told that they didn't take cards. Is this usual for hairdressers?
I have never been to one that doesn't take them.

Then had the drama of finding a cashpoint to draw money out to go and pay them!

Seems bizarre to me....I mean- who carries £50 cash around with them? I know I don't!

My old hairdrsser was like this. Used to drive me mad!! luckily i usually have my cheque book on me. They did used to have a sign up on the desk so you knew before you had the cut.

foofi · 01/06/2008 09:33

Our dentist doesn't take cards either.

LuckyStrike · 01/06/2008 09:49

Most hairdressers I know of don't take cards. I think the big chains like spit Tony & Guy do, but most smaller salons don't. It is too costly to them.

Rachmumoftwo · 01/06/2008 09:52

It costs so much to be able to accept credit and debit cards I can see why small businesses don't, tbh.

MrsCarrot · 01/06/2008 09:53

always pay by cheque in the hairdresser

glaskham · 01/06/2008 09:55

i worked in a small salon and we took cards. though i know lots who dont!!

sophiewd · 01/06/2008 10:10

I know lots of small businesses who don't taker cards (us included) just costs so much.

VictorianSqualor · 01/06/2008 10:20

My hairdressers don't take cards, but they do have a cashpoint right next to it.

lucyellensmum · 01/06/2008 10:26

Shiney, what is wrong with cash??? Are you royalty

lucyellensmum · 01/06/2008 10:27

of course it could be that they think that you will adopt the "keep the change" attitude if you pay by cash, netting them a further couple of quid for every customer. I never tip hairdressers, they rip me off enough as it is (says she who hasn't had her hair cut for over a year)

Our little local hairdressers doesnt take cards either and we have no local cash point! Seems daft as it doesnt cost that much extra to take a card payment.

Flibbertyjibbet · 01/06/2008 12:35

It doesnt cost that much extra to take each payment, but the banks charge a rental on the machines to take the payments. They have to pay a much higher percentage to take credit card payments than debit cards, so unless they are to take a hit on credit card payments, are they supposed to have 3 payment scales ; Cash, debit card, credit card?

Personally as a small business I think anything that gets you paid more efficiently is worth the money. But a lot of small businesses only see the 'cost to the business' and not how much more efficient it is. After all, it costs them to bank cheques and cash, so they might as well pay the card machine charges.

PuppyMonkey · 01/06/2008 12:40

The amount most hairdressers charge these days, I am surprised they can't afford what the banks charge for a credit charge machine...

Not accepting credit card payment probably loses them customers too

nappyaddict · 01/06/2008 12:40

i'm obviously bizarre i quite often carry £100+ around with me.

PuppyMonkey · 01/06/2008 12:52

You show off nappyaddict!!

I ALWAYS forget to get cash out, just use me Switch/Maestro all the time. Have started getting the bus more now, though, so need to have change. Now why can't buses have credit card machine too.. ??

nappyaddict · 01/06/2008 12:55

now i hate change. that's one thing i never have. i always change all my money at work into the biggest notes and coins possible and then the next day thing duuuh why didn't you keep some change for the bus. btw i only carry all that money around cos i'm too lazy to cash it in the bank!

boring who cares

Blondilocks · 01/06/2008 14:03

The smaller hairdresser I went to took cards, but the larger one I go to now doesn't.

As nothing in there seems to cost less than £30 it is pretty annoying.

stitch · 01/06/2008 14:04

because cash payments dont need to be recorded. so no vat, or taxes need to be paid.

ShinyPinkShoes · 01/06/2008 16:49

vickyisthebest if it's so boring why bother reading or replying in the first place

lucyellensmum- no, not royalty I just don't tend to have more than about £20 on me!

my friend's salon takes cash and cards but not cheques

they did, but one for £80 bounced once, and they had to faff about getting the woman to pay up again, so now no cheques
