Chewy Jelly …

Bought Hartleys Jelly in a pot a couple of weeks ago - was so disappointed! Instead of the watery slimy texture (which I like 😆) it was unusually solid and almost chewy.

I out it down to a bad batch. Today I purchase an M&S jelly with fruit and again - a horrible thick consistency!

Have I been unfortunate? Is it just me? Or has anyone else noticed unpleasantly solid jelly being sold of late?

Jelly is the only food I dislike - texture not taste. I just don’t understand why it’s meant to be nice.

I am on a diet, otherwise I wouldn’t normally consider it, but I’m having it most meal times with fruit for dessert at the moment.

The usual / old consistency was light and refreshing!
(the new consistency is too thick to drag through my teeth)

I loved jelly as a dc but today's jelly doesn't ever taste good.

I love M&S jelly with fruit which is chilled. I think its a lighter texture than Hartleys which needs to be stable at an ambient temperature.

I dont think either are chewy

I use the sugar free sachets and put some fruit in bottom of small tubs I get four portions out of a satchet and it's not chewy.

Jelly isn't proper jelly unless you make it in a rabbit mould, which I do 🐰😊

I’ve never bought jelly in a pot only made it from melting jelly cubes

I like chewy jelly and often just chew the cubes instead

if you want a fat free desert I just have a meringue or marshmallows.

Comeinupto40 · 04/09/2025 11:40

Looks like I’ll have to start making my own jelly. Shame though, it was just so convenient to grab a pot for lunch.
It’s not just fat I’m avoiding but calories in general, so I’m not sure meringue and marshmallows fulfil the brief sadly 😫

Could you not just make your own jelly then you can adjust it to your own taste? It's so easy.

DollyMixers · 04/09/2025 11:42

I find it the opposite and so make my own from the sachets. Last time I bought the ready made hartleys pots (which admittedly was a while ago!) it was so watery and sloppy. I like super strong, firm wobbly jelly.

Same! I always add a bit less water than instructed. Love agar-agar for this reason, as it makes a jelly dense enough you can cut it into cubes…

Haven’t tried the Hartley’s jelly in pots, but the M&S one with fruit isn’t chewy at all imho. I really like it.
