Are you DCs PE teachers of the same gender?

Would you be ok with boys having woman / girls having men for PE?

YABU - No they should be same gender
YANBU - Yes why does it matter

Huh?

Whay difference would gender make on a PE teacher???

What an odd question!

Octavia64 · 03/09/2025 21:41

Well, in primary it’s ustally the class teacher who teaches PE so sometimes it’ll be the same and sometimes not.

in secondary, there’s usually a rotation - they might do eg swimming, badminton, etc. I really don’t see why the teacher needs to be the same gender (do you mean sex or do you really mean gender?)

In my whole time at high school we only had same gender PE teachers, men taught boys, women taught girls. I’m interested in others experiences and thoughts.

Sorry, should have said high school specifically.

In primary, it tends to be the class teacher that teaches PE so they get whatever they get.

Some secondaries split girls and boys for PE and wherever possible the teachers are the same sex as the pupil. DD has a female teacher in secondary.

dementedpixie · 03/09/2025 21:45

As long as the opposite sex teacher isn't in the changing room with them I dont suppose it matters

Comeinupto40 · 03/09/2025 21:46

When I was in school (90s and 00s) the men took the boys for football and rugby and the women took the girls for hockey and netball 🙄 This was “games” lessons.
However, athletics, swimming and gymnastics were mixed sex.
So, a bit of both. And no it didn’t matter or make any difference (if you ignore the sexism, that is).

Interesting you say some secondaries split girls and boys. I’ve only ever know (at secondary) split boy / girl PE sessions. Never known mixed lessons.

In the most recent school I taught in in general men taught the boys and women taught the girls but there were exceptions.

in particular the gcse PE groups were mixed and moved sport each term so sometimes had a make teacher sometimes a female.

there was also a PE group for the disabled students (mostly in wheelchairs) which was taught by a woman. The disabled students also did swimming which was taught by a woman.

DS has had female swim/athletics/cricket/football teachers and DD has had male hockey/swim/athletics/football teachers. There is one female rugby coach at school (DS hasn’t had her, but she’s excellent, plays for the local club), I don’t think school have any male netball coaches, but there are two at DD’s club. As long as they know their sport and aren’t in the changing rooms with them, I’m not in the slightest bit bothered.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 03/09/2025 21:52

My daughter has women and men teachers. She likes the male teachers and says they are kinder.

TheNightingalesStarling · 03/09/2025 21:55

DDs generally have female PE teachers but sometimes they swap depending on sport they are doing that block. (For example Rugby as none of the female PE teachers play. The girls rugby team is run by an English teacher)

Itstheshowgirl · 03/09/2025 21:56

I went to two highschools, the first had women teaching the girls and men teaching the boys but in the second it was mixed. My son has had both male and female PE teachers at highschool.

I don’t see why it would be any kind of issue tbh.

SummerInSun · 03/09/2025 21:56

When I was in high school (in Australia) all PE lessons were mixed and from memory all the PE teachers were men. Never remotely occurred to me this would be a problem, why would it?! We didn’t play any contact sports, but things like hockey, softball, basketball, cricket, football were all done in mixed groups.

For school team of sport against other schools, eg girls hockey and cricket, the PE teachers coached too. Sometimes assisted by volunteer parents, usually dads.

Whaaaaaaat · 03/09/2025 21:59

We had some PE lessons mixed and some separated by sex when I was at school.

My DC are at single-sex schools and I think DS only has male PE teachers (who also coach the girls in sixth form, which is co-ed) but DD has had both male and female PE teachers. Her favourites have been one male and one female, based on their personalities/teaching style.

I wouldn't be concerned about the sex of my DCs' teachers.
