Life isn’t just about being right or honest, it’s about timing and strategy. Some battles aren’t worth fighting and sometimes holding back gets you further than pushing forward. Do you agree or is this just being manipulative?

I definitely agree.

I was thinking about this today, actually.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 03/09/2025 15:57

Hard agree

AncientHarpy · 03/09/2025 15:58

Doesn't this depend on context? Are we talking the workplace, friendships, family or sexual/romantic relationships, campaigning, politics etc?

Arlanymor · 03/09/2025 15:59

Totally agree and I would call it strategic rather than manipulative. Manipulation is being unscrupulous, strategic is anticipating future challenges/opportunities and taking action at the appropriate time with a longer term goal in mind.

Sometimes you have to hold boundaries and walk away. In fact sometimes silence and not reacting is worse for the other person. Or just watching and waiting.

I’d actually say all of the above. In work, friendships, dating or politics, there are moments where being strategic about what you say (and when you say it) really matters. It’s not about being fake, it’s about knowing how to read the room and pick your moment. That can apply just as much to office politics as it can to difficult conversations with family or even how you present yourself online.

I think we often underestimate the value of restraint or timing, especially in a culture that values blunt honesty or “speaking your truth” at all times. That’s the space I’m thinking in but I’d love to hear how others see it in specific areas too.

Aaand thank you for the earworm!!! 😑

Hard agree. I think keeping quiet, taking your time on decisions and not allowing others to pressure you into saying or doing something.

I also tend to be more careful what I say when asked to "be honest". Learnt that the hard way.

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 03/09/2025 16:20

Life is about being true to yourself at that particular time (‘true to yourself’ might mean different things at different stages or ages).

Being manipulative or calculated has never been and never will be included in ‘being true to myself’.

Being fair and honest are really important to me.

Can you give any specific examples?

OriginalUsername2 · 03/09/2025 16:28

It’s wisdom if you ask me. Timing is everything. And knowing that you don’t need to react to everything. Not every situation requires a response.

coxesorangepippin · 03/09/2025 16:31

Absolutely agree

Seenlms like everyone who is doing 'well' does this

Self promotion all the way!!

I won't allow anyone to disrespect me and will ghost rude and disrespectful people.

Arguing with stupid is a waste of time.
