expatinscotland · 31/05/2008 23:48

i think so, kew. is it a play on the 'am i pregnant' ones?

scottishmummy · 31/05/2008 23:50

t'was a nasty thread not worth acknowledging.

milkgoddessmakesthefinestmilk · 31/05/2008 23:51

kewcumber it wasn't anything interesting, just someone saying they find my pfbness annoying.

Kewcumber · 31/05/2008 23:51

shall I start a thread the same - I'm generally quite a happy person and I have a lovely DS (most of the time).

OK I'll go now and forget ever having any idea whats going on around here [grumpy emoitcon]

beaniesteve · 31/05/2008 23:51

Expat: I once walked along the shores of a sea loch at about 7pm on a calm, still, beautiful August evening. Strolling beneath the trees. Wearing shorts. This was in Argyllshire.

I expect you can sort of imagine the state I was in the next morning (being bundled shrieking into the car to be driven into town for nuclear-strenght antihistamines...)

SOme years later I was invited to a boat party on Loch Lomond, and spent the afternoon before scouring the Glasgow chemists for midge repellent. Coated myself in it. Fretted about the dreadful smell. But the midges didn't bite me once and the only bites I got were from this vampire goth bloke I pulled at the party..... I lurrrve Scotland.

expatinscotland · 01/06/2008 16:24

We were well-covered in midgie repellant today!

No bites - and they were out in force.

Wee bastards.

There's a nice rain on just the now, here's hoping the wind keeps blowing.

Earlybird · 01/06/2008 16:29

No experience of midgies - are they the Scottish version of mosquitos?

Earlybird · 01/06/2008 16:29

Similar to chiggers?

suedonim · 01/06/2008 16:36

I tried the Avon stuff yesterday, Expat, to see if it wards off the anopheles mossie out here. The jury's still out about that, but I now know Avon's dry oil spray combined with marble floors will lead one to do an inelegant titser!! Have you seen those (Dunoon China?) mugs with different types of mosquito on? They always make me chuckle.

Btw, would you like to share your recipe for malt loaf? Sounds delish!

expatinscotland · 01/06/2008 16:45

I'm pretty sure it's Bree's recipe, suedonim, but it might be Carmenere's. I remember it's someone Irish and my Scots husband and children LOVE it!

Anyhow, here goes:

MALT LOAF

75ml hand hot water
200g brown flour or 100g wholemeal flour+100g strong white flour (this is what I use)
1/2 tsp salt
2tbsp malt extract
2tbsp black treacle
25g margarine
30g soft brown sugar
100g sultanas
Honey or golden syrup to glaze
1 tsp fast action easy blend yeast (I use the Alison's stuff in a white sachet)

Mix the yeast with the flour

Add salt and sultanas

Warm the water, malt, treacle, marg and sugar until just melted and sugar dissolved, and stir into flour mixture.

Turn onto floured surface and knead until no longer sticky, adding more flour if necessary.

Shape and place in a greased 500g loaf tin. Cover and leave to prove in a warm place until doubled in size - about 1-1.5 hours.

Back at 220C, Gas Mark 7 for half an hour until browned and loaf sounds hollow when tin is tapped on the bottom.

Cool on a wire rack.

Whilst loaf is still hot brush the top with the honey or syrup.

It ROCKS!

Expat, it sounds like you live near me, I recognise the Tesco's.
If anyone wants to come to Scotland and not get eaten alive try taking Vit B for 2 weeks prior, the midgies hate it and will leave you alone.

expatinscotland · 01/06/2008 16:59

we're on the other side of the water, sherb.

for a while, though, until the one in Greenock was re-opened after refurbishment, that was our closest Tesco.

sherbetdipdab · 01/06/2008 17:42

Aah, we are right through Port Glasgow and up the hill.

expatinscotland · 01/06/2008 18:02

it's a good Tesco, though, with great parking! just don't park your car too far from the door if at all possible .

suedonim · 01/06/2008 18:44

That sounds scrummy, thank you! It'll have to wait until I'm home as I can't get so many of those ingredients here . I told dh I needed to pack wholemeal flour, syrup etc.

i think if it's wrapped in clingy and then foil, like an Xmas cake, then it would survive.

i wish i could remember who originally posted the recipe.

it was a couple of years ago and i just printed it off.

i tried to find out a couple of days ago searching the archives but no joy.

i think it was Bree, though.
