Getting our dog neutered next week so have to take Annual Leave for when he goes in & also the next day when he’s at home.
What are your thoughts on this?

It's your leave, do what you want with it.

TimeForTeaAndG · 02/09/2025 23:10

I don't see an issue. Annual leave isn't just for going on holiday.

ML5 · 02/09/2025 23:10

Haven’t taken the Annual Leave yet but booking it tomorrow have a good relationship with my Colleague who knows but also with my Boss who doesn’t know reason for me booking the Annual Leave tomorrow as she was off today

I think it's a ridiculous reason to take annual leave and if I was your manager I would be a bit Hmm

mrsfollowill · 02/09/2025 23:11

Leave is taken when you want it generally so take it! Better than calling in sick (which I have had people try to do!) because they are anxious and depressed about their dog/cat/tortoise

Cheyennegreen · 02/09/2025 23:12

Why does your boss need to know what you’re doing with your annual leave? Just take it

Fair enough but at the same time I can’t leave dog alone at home & also have to take/pick up from Vets

You don't even need to give a reason.
But it seems a pretty good one to me. I guess the day you take your dog in doesn't strictly need the whole day off but the day you collect and even the next day depending on what time you collect you should be there to keep them safe.

Mandarinaduck · 02/09/2025 23:13

Surely you don't have to give reasons for annual leave???
Just take it and do whatever you like with it.

FebruaryUsername · 02/09/2025 23:14

I've never told work what my annual leave is for, nor have they asked. Take your leave for whatever you want/need.
A good portion of my leave has been used for vet trips over the years.

Seriously, it’s nobody’s business why you’re taking annual leave - if what you’re worried about is its short notice, if there’s cover it makes no difference. You could be getting a Brazilian butt lift, taking two days off to weed your flowerbeds, going on a 48h rave or doing a pilgrimage. It’s nobody’s business!

ML5 · 02/09/2025 23:16

Taking Dog in early morning picking up mid-afternoon.

First post nails it. You don't need to offer up your reasons for scrutiny.

If it's a particularly difficult date for work and they don't approve your leave, it's easy enough to change the date of the op.

Why would you care what people do with their annual leave? Stupid comment

If you were her manager why would you even know why she was taking time off? Personal reasons covers it.

Pricelessadvice · 02/09/2025 23:21

If you want to take annual leave to look after your dog, that’s perfectly acceptable. You can use your annual leave for anything you want.
Even if that’s just to sit in the chair all day and nap. It’s your leave, you do what you like with it.

ChampagneJen · 02/09/2025 23:24

OP can you explain why you are asking the question as I don’t get what you might be concerned about

OnTheBoardwalk · 02/09/2025 23:26

annual leave is yours to take, given business needs, for what ever reason

i've taken Mondays off because I’ve had (not a lot) of things to do at a weekend that will make me sleepy. Take the time off and be with your dog

some managers I’ve chatted about what I’m doing when off others have just been I’m requesting this time off

TrousersOfTime · 02/09/2025 23:27

It's your leave - do what you want! So long as you're giving enough notice of your leave, it's absolutely no one's business what you're using it for. I've often taken annual leave to catch up on life admin - getting DCats in for vaccinations or the car in for it's MOT. DDog will appreciate you being around, and I'd try and do something nice for you between drop off and pick up on day 1 (hair cut, nails, a nice lunch or similar) and then line up a box set for day 2 and take the opportunity to potter a bit - a few loads of laundry, bit of cooking, renewing the car tax if it's due etc.

I think it’s ridiculous even thinking about needing to know or care about why an employee is taking time off

i hope you aren’t a manager judging people’s annual leave

I think it's a ridiculous reason to take annual leave and if I was your manager I would be a bit Hmm

So if you were in charge your staff would have zero time off unless you approved the reasons? How ridiculous.

She can do whatever she likes with her annual leave!

Before I had kids (and therefore needed it all for childcare) I would take all sorts of random days off, including Christmas shopping and occasional binge watching of various box sets. I would never judge (or ask, unless they mentioned going away etc) what my staff need time off for now

SallyD00lally · 02/09/2025 23:32

I don't really know why you're asking what our thoughts are OP?

It's like me starting a thread asking for thoughts on me taking annual leave to...I don't know, go shoe shopping or something.

Annual leave is yours to do whatever you want with 😳

Why is it ridiculous? It’s her leave to take as she chooses and do what she wants on it

ML5 · 02/09/2025 23:33

I don’t think my Manager will have a issue
with me taking the 2 days Annual Leave off as it’s just me/work colleague who work together in one section & as long as one of us is in she’s fine with it however she most likely will ask why
