So emotional over child starting primary school

My baby (third child) is starting primary school this week. I can’t stop crying about it!
I don’t know if it’s because he’s my last, but I am way too emotional.
I work nights and have always been home with him, apart from his mornings in nursery. So my days will feel a little empty to say the least!

Is anyone else feeling like this? A lot of parents I speak to say they cannot wait for their children to go to school so they can do their own thing.

It's the end of an era. Next stage. Different people find different things emotional. End of Y6 is tough too.

Gosh I know, just done end of primary with one of mine and now they’re in high school. Big changes in our house. Just struggling with this one more than usual

I’ve never related to these feelings, but that doesn’t make them any less real for you! 🤗

Eenameenadeeka · 02/09/2025 22:12

I felt that way too. They were absolutely fine when they got there though:)

My DD is starting year 11 tomorrow I also feel really sad about it, my one and only is really growing up now! And I can’t get my head around it!

It’s also the same day my 2 dogs are going to their settling in sleepover at the kennels which I am also emotional about as both dogs are rescues so I’m hating the thought they think I won’t be back for them 😭

I’ve got that gap too but you’re a year ahead of us. Agh, already dreading next year, number 3 to reception and number 1 to secondary. Waaah! Babies. Goes so bloody fast. Hope it all goes smoothly for you all.

I found high school harder with my eldest than school. They change so much post 11/12. You lose your little boy/girl. School didn’t feel much different than nursery. My youngest starts high school in two years 😭 I’m going to replace her with a dog 🤣

I feel the same as my baby is starting secondary. She's so young in my head!

Dallyingabout · 02/09/2025 23:14

I feel exactly the same! Except in my case it’s the eldest of three who will be starting reception. I can’t believe my baby is so grown up, and I truly under what people mean when they tell new parents that TIME FLIES!

PurpleChrayn · 02/09/2025 23:22

I sent mine off with a hug and a kiss and then fucking rejoiced, if I’m honest.

niki26 · 03/09/2025 06:28

I do understand - when my eldest started reception I was pregnant with my youngest, so I knew I was going to be experiencing it again which I think made it easier back then, as I wasn’t at all fussed about her starting school! She had been at the attached preschool for two years already but so has my youngest, and she’s starting reception today! Definitely feeling it a bit more this time. My husband is taking me for a nice breakfast once we’ve dropped off so that’s something to look forward to and the girls will be so excited to tell me about their days when I pick them up later!

Aww I hope they’ve had a great first day, and that you’re coping well xx

I don't know why but I felt quite emotional reading your post. My baby is starting childcare and it feels so emotional. I think all these milestones are huge and it's natural to feel emotional.

How old is your baby? The milestones are so tough, I am an emotional wreck and feel physically drained. I’m generally a really strong person but this has hit me for six I cry myself to sleep! God help me tomorrow when he goes, I fear he will cry a lot too because he took weeks & weeks to settle into nursery
