I live in a residential area but it’s not a big town. Roads can fit two cars but most don’t have white lines down the middle and the roads are also very bendy.
This morning on the way to work as I turned left out of my road, a jogger was on the pavement on my right side further down. He started to (what I assumed) cross the road. But instead of making his way on to the pavement he stayed on the road. I thought well maybe he wants to avoid stepping on the grass verges (dog shit etc) but I didn’t have space to get round him on this road and I was turning left at the end anyway so I just waited. There was a dropped kerb to cross at the junction. But instead of getting back on the pavement he stayed running in the road. I still can’t get round him safely due to the bends in the road. He also had ear phones in so I’m not sure if he can even hear me behind him. Now this road is quite a long road out of the residential area but it has perfectly normal pavements he can use. (I know this because I run myself on them regularly!)
After another minute or so a car came up behind me and beeped his horn. The jogger turned around and swore at me! (Obviously assuming it was me who beeped at him). But he did then move to the pavement.
Was the other driver unreasonable to beep at him? I had debated doing it myself but wasn’t sure whether that was the wrong thing to do! I understand cyclists need to be in the road and yes I admit to finding them annoying when I can’t get past for ages but I obviously don’t beep at them as they are meant to be there and I need to just wait. But what’s reasonable for a jogger who could use normal sized (very quiet) pavements?
