Stinky breath partner

so my partners breath has always stunk but he has a great personality and he’s litterally all I’ve ever wanted apart from the breath. I’ve been avoiding kissing him (we’ve only been together 2 months) but eventually I’m gonna have to give in. I told him that if he doesn’t get his breath sorted out by the end of next month I’ll have to leave him and he got ridiculously angry for this!?? AIBU???

I have a similar problem. Unfortunately my partner’s bum smells really bad. Like it leaves a scent when he sits down. I’ve told him about it but he doesn’t seem to want to bath more than around twice a week

Ew. Take him to the vets before he starts scooting it across the carpet.

Like dog anal glands? Maybe some moist toilet tissue would help?

Or taking a shower once a day! What is wrong with you women that you put up with these stinking men? I couldn't live with anyone who ignored their personal hygiene. Bleugh!!!!

I miss the laugh reaction so much

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 02/09/2025 14:14

Is he on the paleo diet by any chance? I had a partner who started this diet and his breath turned rancid overnight. It was horrible. Another partner was very overweight and also had bad breath.

That is totally grim.

This is a complete deal breaker. I could sympathise if it was a medical issue and couldn’t be helped but this is purely down to being lazy and unhygienic. How you can stomach to be near him is beyond me.

DaisyChain505 · 02/09/2025 14:24

There’s no excuse for poor oral hygiene. Does he brush for two minutes twice a day @PeedofNeighbour ?

Does he floss every day and use mouth wash?

Does he visit the dentist regularly?

Has he seen a GP about the issue?

BauhausOfEliott · 02/09/2025 14:25

It's been two months. You barely know him at this point. Who cares if he was annoyed when you told him his breath smelled? Just dump him and move on.

I would say, though, that if you really did just say, without any prior discussion or niceties, 'Your breath smells gross and if you don't fix it by a certain date I'm dumping you', you need to learn a bit about tact and diplomacy. Fine to have this as a deal-breaker but 'Hey, I really don't want to offend you here, but I'm wondering if maybe you should see your dentist because I've noticed your breath smells quite bad at the moment? Or maybe it's a sinus problem or tonsil stones or something like that? I don't want you to be upset but it's really noticeable and I think it needs sorting' would have been a better way to broach it.

oopsHereItIs · 02/09/2025 14:47

Your approach is correct - give him a deadline to sort it and if he fails to, then you say byebye. Life is too short to deal with someone with bad breath, let alone a partner you share intimate moments with!

It's most likely plaque build-up and maybe some decay in multiple teeth. My husband didn't have the best dental hygiene routine when we first met (luckily, not as bad as what you've described here😂) but he knew his teeth were not in the best condition and took my feedback well and is all sorted now.

Also, one trip to the dentist now might sort it short-term; your dp will also need to agree to routine checkups and hygienist appointments.

Why does he want to inflict his stinky breath on you?! I’d be so embarrassed to kiss my DH if I had stinky breath.

Praying4Peace · 02/09/2025 14:59

Really difficult one
Is he drinking enough water?
Cleaning teerh properly and using mouthwash?

Travsmam · 02/09/2025 15:10

Hubby was the same. Trip to the dentist and treatment for gum disease sorted it out. Also flossing is a big thing. People who don’t floss have nasty breath. Get him to floss then smell the floss. It will shock him x

Jackiepumpkinhead · 02/09/2025 15:20

He probably needs to floss, it’s worrying how many people don’t.

Although, bad breath isn’t always bad dental hygiene and can be caused by gut issues, that’s harder to fix.

he will be ashamed, shame usually comes out as anger. We don’t like, I mean any of us, to feel shame.

MrsLizzieDarcy · 02/09/2025 15:41

How is someone you've known for 8 weeks and can't kiss a partner?!!

Bin him off OP. If he can't make an effort, why should you. Raise that bar.

mondaytosunday · 02/09/2025 15:47

That’s rather extreme ‘sort it or we’re done’. A more diplomatic approach surely?
But if he refuses to see the dentist or change his oral hygiene then I wouldn’t put up with that.

I can't quite get over this one...

Get moist toilet wipes. He will see the visual evidence
