My folate levels are 2.9 so just under the threshold, just came back from the doctors and they said it shouldnt be causing me any sypmtoms and said there is no need to give me folic acid but if i feel like i might benefit from it i can get a multivitamin 🤦‍♀️ Seriously feel like i have dementia, achey, dizzy, lightheaded, tingling feet etc

Mine were 3.5 & I felt so tired, was in bed by 6pm etc. you can buy a 3 month supply of 5mg online for £20

So buy some folic acid if you're so sure your symptoms are caused by low folate.

I assumed my oestrogen would be low as I felt anxious panicky but it turned out to be low folate was the only one out of range. I bought some methylated b9 as some people have a faulty gene which makes it difficult for them to convert cheaper folic acid to folate levels. (Google for accurate description!). I eat lots of leafy greens but stress can mean you need extra folate - in a couple of weeks, my mood has lifted dramatically! Worth a try. They are more expensive than cheap folic acid tabs but I read that these can make it more difficult to absorb folate too.

The level has been changed, the normal range used to be above 4 and they changed it to 3. I have significant symptoms, very similar to yours, when my folate is low and they used to prescribe 5mg folic acid. I would definitely buy yourself a good supplement but if your symptoms don't resolve with over the counter supplements I would go back to GP and ask for them to prescribe folic acid. Also, did they check your b12? Worth checking vitamin D as well.

Absolutely this re. Folic acid. There are a lot of people (conservative estimate around 25% but some sources say at least 50%) that have genetic mutations which mean they struggle to convert folic acid (which is a factory-made version of folate) into the active form. This can worsen deficits because the folic acid can actually block the folate receptor sites in susceptible individuals … methyl folate or L-methyl folate (5-MTHF) is what it will say on the label for the ‘activated’ form.
