What blinds for north facing small living room?

I live in a terrace 2 up 2 down. There is some space between my window and the footpath, however every dog walker and jogger that goes past gawks right in a stares straight at me. I need some privacy so have decided its time for blinds.
The front is north facing and doesn't get sunlight until about 6.30 - 7pm. Even then, its only coming in at an angle and not for long.
Any ideas what blinds are best to ensure that the whole room is not constantly plunged in darkness?
TIA

I had wooden blinds which you could tilt. If you tilt it like this then you still got the light inside, but people couldn't see in

Have you considered window film? The kind where you can see out but people can't see in? Otherwise, just very thin white blinds I'd say.

i’m in a similar situation in a block of flats, where my ground floor windows are passed by everybody going in and out. I was really pleased with these sheer John Lewis linen blinds that don’t seem to affect the light levels at all, just the visibility from outside

You can mount roller blinds on the bottom of the window, not the top, letting you pull them part way up only to let in more light. Make sure they aren't too opaque too.

Or try cafe curtains. Sheer, and hung from half way up the window only.

That's a very common challenge with north-facing rooms. The goal is to find a balance between privacy and maximising the limited natural light you have.
For your situation, the best options are typically light-filtering shades that obscure the view into the room while still allowing a softened, diffused glow to come through. This prevents the room from feeling dark and cave-like.
The top choices we recommend at Gallery Shutters for this are:

  1. Light Filtering Cellular Shades: Their honeycomb design is great for a small room as they also add a layer of insulation. They provide excellent privacy while still allowing a good amount of light to filter through, maintaining a soft, bright ambiance.
  2. Sheer Horizontal Shades (e.g., Silhouette-style): These are perfect for this. You can adjust the vanes to let in light while the sheer fabric still provides privacy, or close them completely for more coverage while the material continues to diffuse light.
We'd advise avoiding heavy, opaque materials or dark colors. Instead, opt for lighter colors like white or cream to help reflect and maximize the available light. Hope this helps you find the perfect solution.
