To think I probably have to chuck this chicken away?

Last night around 6.30 I made this recipe for the slow cooker https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/slow-cooker-chicken-chasseur

so basically you fry off the chicken and start off the sauce so everything goes into the slow cooker already hot. I asked my DH to turn the slow cooker on when he went to bed around 11 with the intention of it being cooked for this morning so we could both take a portion to work for lunch and put the rest in the fridge for dinner tomorrow. Of course he forgot to turn it on, so the chicken has been sitting out overnight in Lukewarm sauce. I think I need to bin it? Or would you still eat it?
YABU = no it’s fine eat it
YANBU = yes bin it

Throw a handful of ingredients in the slow cooker at the start of the day and this classic French chicken chasseur will be ready by the time you get home

@UpUpAwayz or would you rather have food poisoning for the rest of the week???

derxa · 01/09/2025 13:57

I wouldn’t throw it away. I would eat every single scrap.

It's either lose £10 of chicken or lose 10lb of weight through vom and shits...

I could actually do with losing a few pounds… but joking aside, chicken is now in the bin (sob) and DH made curry for dinner so is semi-forgiven.

TBH even leaving it out between 6:30-11:30 it wasn’t fit to eat. It’s not like you prepared the chicken and cooked it - you left it out in warm sauce so it was essentially festering in it.

Next time you need to either prep it late at night and put the slow cooker on, or put the slow cooker on early and stay up until it’s finished and cooled so you can put it in the fridge.

Never take chances with chicken.

Eek, I missed this from the OP.

It was never going to be safe to eat even if he had turned the cooker on.

Admittedly, I have a slightly cavalier attitude to prompt refrigeration of food and will leave a pot on the hob to cool overnight, etc. I also hate food waste.

However, even I would be chucking that. Galling, as you say, but better safe than sorry.

I did cook it though! It was fried off and bubbled in a hot sauce. I get what you’re saying about being extra careful though. As I said, I chucked it.

I’d probably eat it as I’ve a tough old stomach but at any rate I would give it to my dog or leave for the foxes as it’s such a waste

CatsorDogsrule · 02/09/2025 15:48

Cooked or not, chicken sitting at room temperature from 6:30 to 11 is not safe practice, at all. The bin was the correct choice.

There was a guy on the radio yesterday who got food v poisoning from. Chicken on holiday. He said he couldn't even hug himself without being in pain!

Yes throw it away, but I also wouldn’t want to eat it if it had been left out lukewarm from 6.30pm until 11pm either.

Exactly this. I'd just turn it on when you'd cooked the chicken, to be fair.

Cooked and then left for 5 hours though. What made you think that was safe?
