£100 for a casual lunch out for 4 is too much

Deeply middle class problem but. Anyone else noticed that you can no longer get out of the likes of Bill’s, Wagamama, Pizza Express, etc , with two teens, for less than £100. Is this just inflation, NI effects, price gouging, what? AIBU to stay home?

I’m mid 50’s and used to have Wimpys once a month, a restaurant called Garfunkel’s a few times a year, a place called Pizza Land sometimes too. Every Saturday lunch time when out with shopping with my mum we’d get a soup and roll deal at the bakery for lunch and I chose a cake (always bread pudding) to have at home). We also had a Chinese takeaway occasionally.
My DH never ate out, he had Little Chef a few times in his childhood and that’s it. He had a more traditional MC childhood, his DM mostly SAHM/worked part time, his DF solid MC job and they owned their own property. I had a WC background, council house, DM always worked full time (which was unusual in my friendship group) and DF did a manual job.

Yeah see my parents wouldn’t have liked a pizza restaurant. Had an occasional cake in BHS if out shopping with DM

That would bloat me like a balloon!

I have endo so I permanently look like a balloon anyway! No issues with food though
I just have meat, veg and all the Yorkshires and no potatoes

Why should our child hood have any bearing on how we choose to live our adult lives

Not saying it would just how things have changed and how eating out has become regular and not a treat anymore.

Oldglasses · 01/09/2025 17:22

Pizza Exoress has been expensive and mediocre for years! We used Tesco vouchers when we went as a family.

greengreyblue · 01/09/2025 17:24

Went last year to PE and it was poor. It was so cold in there and when I asked if air con could go off the waitress said I could keep my coat on if I liked….

It shouldn’t but the point is eating out is still a luxury. It’s not a necessity is it?

Florally · 01/09/2025 18:00

WFHforevermore · 01/09/2025 14:54

Come off it. You cant get 6 "huge" slices from a PE pizza 😂

I disagree, especially if it’s a romana pizza.

Florally · 01/09/2025 18:02

Bluelilacbella · 01/09/2025 15:58

Three ‘huge’ slices Grin?!

There is no way that half a thin pizza will be enough to fill up an adult, let alone a growing teen!!

Well I don’t know what to tell you, that’s what we get and we leave full 😂

MyElatedUmberFinch · 01/09/2025 19:06

No wonder there’s an obesity crisis in this county, the pizza with the whole in the middle filled with rocket is plenty for a family of four. Plus the leftovers are enough for lunch the next day.

Yes, those rocket leaves are soo filling!!!

I can easily eat a whole pizza when I go out for a meal and am hungry (and my bmi is about 19)

LittleBearPad · 01/09/2025 19:30

We get one order of dough balls between the four of us; does us for the week.

If the staff of a service business are so low paid they need the tax payer to top up to a basic living standard then yes, they should be paid more and that will mean less meals out for most people.

Effectively the taxpayer subsidises cheap eating out and a range of cheaper personal services and has done ever since they became a mass market activity rather than occasional luxuries.

It still doesn't answer my question re who decided that eating out "should" be once a year event :)

The leggera pizza with the hole in the middle with some rocket in it, you’re suggesting that feed family of 4 and generate left overs for next day lol

its a @500calorie Pizza with a hole in the middle, essential pizza crust with leaves, it’s intended as diet pizza for 1 person not a hearty meal for 4 with left over next day too

Classic mn competitive under eating

I can’t believe you think it’s for one person, , it’s massive and the salad is even more massive than a classic mumsnet massive salad.

oh apologies if I got it wrong, in my defence, there’s a slew of under eating boasts. 4 Adults sharing pizza, adults eating kids menu and feeling full. It’s a fairly usual mn under eating comment

Crikeyalmighty · 01/09/2025 19:42

@Florally personally I’m with you on this and am 13stone 6 and not usually a small water ( although been on 1200 cals a day for last 5 months) - between 2 of us ( 13 stone husband) I would get a Romano , a full size salad and maybe some dough balls and that would be plenty
