I’ll start things off by saying I have a dog myself and normally scoff at all the people rolling their eyes over dogs in pubs and cafes. Can even forgive younger, less well behaved dogs because they have to learn and be exposed to different situations.

HOWEVER

Today I went to get in a lift in John Lewis with my DC and a woman with a pushchair and TWO massive labradors asked if I wouldn’t mind waiting because one of her dogs were nervous about being crowded.

Why are you in John Lewis then?
Is it really necessary for the dogs to come out with you?
Did they come in the car especially or do you live in town?
how does it all work logistically?

So many questions. And also just a bit annoyed I had to wait for the next lift

I’m horrified they are allowed into LEGOLAND/disneyland and cinemas…
They definitely are NOT allowed in Legoland or Disneyland. Those posters must have visited when there were a very large number of service dogs visiting...🤔

They most certainly are allowed at Legoland. I am quite clear on what I saw and it was upsetting to see the state these dogs were in.

Can I bring my dog to LEGOLAND®?

Your dog is welcome in LEGOLAND® Billund, but for the sake of our other visitors we ask you to clean up after it. Dog cleanup bags are available free of charge from our ticket inspectors at the ent...

My friends 7 year old DD gets hayfever like symptoms around dogs. She goes to a school where the headteacher brings her huge wolfhound to school each day and calls it a therapy dog.

Phatgurslyms · 01/09/2025 08:54

I was at a train station the other day and this woman was holding her dog as if it was a toddler. She was talking to it like that too, explaining when the trains were coming etc. I had to look twice to make sure it was in fact a dog she was holding. It was bizarre to me. But then she was a fairly mature woman and I wondered if she might be lonely, the dog her only companion. Loneliness is a big thing these days. Society is so atomised. People have deeper relationships with their phone than with family members. In fact the phone is probably contributing to family breakups (Ltb, go NC etc)

I am sometimes lonely myself. I wish I was a dog or cat person.

Hope I have not derailed the thread because I agree with op.

Dahlietta · 01/09/2025 08:54

@Glitterandmud Ah, sorry, I assumed you were talking about Windsor, not the one in Denmark. I have never been there!

Wow. That is awful.

I have more dogs than is sensible, and I don’t take my idiots anywhere that isn’t entirely appropriate. They don’t understand the concept of shopping, or eating in a restaurant or any of the human things I do so they stay at home with their beds and toys and enjoy the peace and quiet while I’m out.

My rats though - they’d bloody love a trip to JL! They’re the nosiest creatures and would adore judging you on what you’re buying. Alas, the day has not yet come when I can take my intellectual equals shopping but come the revolution 😄

AliceMaforethought · 01/09/2025 08:58

YANBU for this, of course. However, YABU to 'scoff' over people who don't want dogs in pubs and cafes. Perhaps this incident will open your eyes to the fact that a lot of us have to tolerate dogs where they aren't wanted. This woman's entitlement was merely a more extreme example of the entitlement of all too many dog owners.

HangryLikeTheHulk · 31/08/2025 19:25

They should totally leave the furbastards at home

I agree.

I was once told I couldn't enter a shop as I was holding a cup of take away coffee in case I spilt it.

I pointed out there were several dogs in the shop already. Which did they think was more a hygiene issue. Dogs pissing up clothes etc.

SqueamishHamish · 01/09/2025 09:01

I agree that dogs should be left at home when their owner goes shopping. I have a spaniel and when he shakes his head slobber goes up the wall. You are not telling me that clothes etc in stores like Lewis's aren't getting soiled by dogs. Honestly, i get second hand embarrassment from dog owners treating their mutts like humans. It's quite sad.

Chompingatthebeat · 01/09/2025 09:02

There are far worse things in the world than dogs, its not something i can get worked up about, just share the space

Whatareyoutalkingaboutnow · 01/09/2025 09:03

There was a spaniel in my local John Lewis perfume section last week. Looked stressed and panting. Why take them, it's ridiculous.

OP was happy to share the space though - it was the entitled dog owner who wasn't!

I was in the cafe in John Lewis on Oxford Street: the couple next to me gave their massive Retriever a drink of water from a MUG, and he slobbered it all over the wooden floor which dried into a lovely stain. They then let him lick their plates clean!! I'm never going back, it was awful.

Willoo · 31/08/2025 21:06

At least it’s not cats everywhere. That would be far worse

Why?

Cardinalita90 · 01/09/2025 09:07

People putting their own needs above their dog's. I was at a battle reenactment earlier this year complete with cannon explosions and a man beside me had a dog- poor thing was terrified! I did say loudly to my friend (true pass agg style) how absurd it was and he left soon after.

RopiJo · 01/09/2025 09:07

Hate dogs. All dogs. Dirty, smelly, disgusting creatures. If people want dogs that's fine, but keep them at home. That way dog owners are forced to clean up their shit, and I won't fucking tread in it! And the non-stop barking!!! If I could push one button and that would mean all dogs would be gone.... I'd push it. (guide dogs excepted)

Love cats. Have 6 of them. My cats have a secure outdoor run over 100 sq m, and full run of my house. They are a nuisance to nobody.

Whether you are a cat person, or a dog person, it's 100% your responsibility to ensure your pets are your problem, and nobody elses.

If you cannot provide adequate living condition don't get a cat or dog. 6 Alsations in a flat seems the norm these days! Get a bloody Gerbil instead!

And don't get me started on breeders! Should be 100% banned.

That's my rant over. Feel better now.😃

Ablondiebutagoody · 01/09/2025 09:08

DS trains for his sport on a 400m track marked out in the grass at the local park. He uses about 8 small cones placed at intervals around the track. Every time, without fail a dog will piss on one, grab one, chew one, run off with one. When you confront the owner they don't give a shit. Several respond with "well why did you leave it there?". Like everything in the park is fair game for their stupid fucking dog.

IsawwhatIsaw · 01/09/2025 09:08

I have an allergy to dogs, not just itching but asthma and wheezing if bad.
for my birthday recently I was bought a years Cinema membership, have just seen they have screenings that allow dogs.
I don’t trust the cleaning so not sure if I can use this now.
Last week I was in a pub/ restaurant that stated dogs only allowed in bar, couple came in with 2 dogs due to rain. And at at next table.
explained I have an allergy , woman did not want to move though waitress was good and found another table eventually .
it is truly difficult to find anywhere without dogs now.

You mean they put their wants above the dog's needs. No one needs to go to see a battle enactment!

Yes the place is always full of them, it’s so odd

The idea of John lewis being rammed full of dogs is somehow making me guffaw. I dont know why.

This reminded me of the pet mice I had as a child. They would sit in the top pocket of my school shirt.

I'm not a dog owner but plan to be so in the near future. I think its nice that dogs are allowed in more places but then again I'm not allergic to them!

The problem is, is where does this end? I have a cat. Should the cat & rabbits be allowed in more public places on a leash and/ or harness?

A dog's nose is tens of thousands of times more sensitive than ours. Taking a dog to a perfume dept or a hairdressing salon is cruelty.

I would actually raise this as a safeguarding/ health issue maybe with governors? The Head is saving on dog care costs.
