To be surprised not everyone sees smells as shapes

I am 53 years old and made a passing comment to DH that I've didn't like his new aftershave because it smelt too oval. He looked at me like I was insane. It turns out he doesn't see shapes as smells!

Anyone else see smells? I feel like I may have some weird super power but can't for the life of me work out how to save lives with it or makes myself rich from it. 🤣
Anyone else have any strange superpowers they have just discovered?

You have honestly at the age of 53 never ever realised this before...
I think you have.

I know someone who sees the days of the week as different colours and textures.

I do this with colours.

Monday = green
Tuesday = pale blue
Wed = dark blue
Thurs = red
Friday = white
Sat = yellow
Sun = gold

Words have colours for my mum.

I have a form where I get sharp, shooting 'sweet' pains in my shins when I see or am told about anyone having a small injury that cuts the skin. Like a paper cut or similar. Oddly, it doesn't happen if I read about it. It has to be told to me or seen by me.

Itsnottheheatitsthehumidity · 31/08/2025 19:52

This is all fascinating stuff! I've never heard of this before.

If people have colours, does this mean they get confused with auras? Or does the person "see" auras but they aren't really auras because of their synaesthesia? I don't think auras exist, but I can understand why they might feel real for some people.

As for words, days of the week, scents having colours or shapes, this is mind-blowing!

I suppose it's like people who have silence in their head, whereas I have a constant internal monologue and often find myself talking to myself aloud. We are all different!

SteakBakesAndHotTakes · 31/08/2025 19:52

I have a weird type of synaesthesia that means I taste words. When I was a child I would repeat or avoid saying/reading certain words due to the taste. I was very surprised to learn it wasn't normal!

Synaesthesia.

You're not the only one who has it, but it's not common!

I see words, names n numbers as colours, always have

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 31/08/2025 20:16

I don’t do this but I do think of smells has having colours.

DoYouReally · 31/08/2025 20:16

I don't do this or really understand it.

I find it fascinating. A friend of mine sees days as colours too and also illnesses as colours.

Ah for me Mon-Fri are varying shades of red and pink (blending - Weds is the palest), Saturday is green and Sunday is white.

Always been this way.

I also see the year as a circle (it’s not quite a circle, more like a mix of a circle and a triangle) that we go round and round - apparently that’s weird too. And you can zoom in on the weeks and months

MumoftwoNC · 31/08/2025 20:22

I have synaesthesia too as do my sibling and one of my parents. It's not particularly rare, they estimate 3-5%. This means, say, in a typical classroom it's 1 or 2 children in the class with it. I sometimes mention it in passing to my teen students, if we're talking about something related, and have always had at least one in each class with alpha-numeric synaesthesia (not that they knew that's what it's called).

For me and my family members it goes hand in hand with issues like misophonia so it's not entirely a "superpower". There are benefits and downsides of having it

TennisLady · 31/08/2025 20:33

Interesting to see others also see days of the week as colours, I always have and if I’ve ever mentioned in the past been told I’m strange 😂
Monday - Green
Tuesday - Yellow
Wednesday - Orange
Thursday - Blue
Friday - Red
then the two weekend days are a sort of hazy blue.

Kreepture · 31/08/2025 20:41

i dont have that.. i do get words/sounds that feel good/bad when hearing them/saying them. Certain ones evoke feelings.

Pain has a shape.. and that's a recognised thing.. Kiki, or Bouba.. Kiki being sharp/stabby pain, and bouba being more.. rounded.

There are also certain sounds that make my brain silent, i have ADHD, its known as 8D frisson.. and hearing it just.. silences the noise in my head like nothing else.

rebeccachoc · 31/08/2025 21:35

I see numbers and dates as colours so I'm totally understanding what you are saying. I would have loved to have seen his face when you said that though!

Teacup40 · 31/08/2025 22:15

Oh I've never heard of this! I do see the days of the week in colour Monday is light blue, tues is yellow weds is green... I'm completely mad 🤣
