Drug driving request from DVLA

DVLArequest · 31/08/2025 13:38

Posting for traffic with no pun intended.
Does anybody know what the process is for reports of drug driving to the DVLA? They have sent forms to the person concerned asking about this. What happens to their license in the meantime? Will the license be revoked? Will they have to undergo a medical? TIA

Didn’t mean to enable voting-it seems to have done it automatically.
And no, it’s not me before anyone suggests it.

I don't understand the question. Have you reported someone for drug driving to the dvla? Or someone you know was? Why are the dvla involved, not the police?

This, the DVLA wouldn’t normally be involved unless the drugs are medical and mean that the licence should be revoked on medical grounds.

Drug driving is criminal and therefore for the police and courts to deal with, not DVLA.

PinkyFlamingo · 31/08/2025 14:17

Wouldn't it be the Police it would be reported to? Has their been blood tests carried out etc

DiscoBob · 31/08/2025 14:20

The suspected drug driver has been sent forms by the DVLA relating to the alleged offence?
I don't see why. It's a police matter surely. The DVLA isn't a governing body, they just issue licenses.

HeadsWinTailsLose · 31/08/2025 14:22

If they’re being/have been prosecuted for drug driving unless the courts put an interim disqualification in place drivers can generally continue to drive until the matter is dealt with at court

If they have a notifiable medication/health condition the letter from the dvla would advise whether they can drive or not.

Sorry, obviously I should have been clearer. The driver has a provisional license and is having lessons whilst using recreational drugs on a regular basis. They have been reported to the DVLA as having a drug misuse condition and the dvla has sent them forms to fill in. The police are not involved and I have no idea about that, only the information given.

Okay that makes more sense.

Most likely the license will be medically revoked whilst they seek treatment. They can reapply for the license when they have completed treatment or when advised by DVLA.

They will then need to supply medical evidence supporting their fitness to drive & may have to attend or have a telephone medical with a clinician employed by the DVLA. They could then be given back the license with no additional requirements or they may need to review the license say every 6 months, 12 months until DVLA is satisfied there is no further risk.

It will depend on the specific details such as the extent of the drug use, how the DVLA was made aware etc. If it's say a medical professional that's reported them that would be handled differently to say if a family member, colleague etc has reported it & also on the evidence.

Thank you that’s helpful. They’ll be fuming if the license gets revoked as it’s their only ID for the pub. Drinking issue too.

They'll have to get a passport, then. Just under a hundred quid.

Hey ho, FAFO.

I hope they haven't hurt anyone while driving under the influence.

If you aren’t taking drugs there is nothing to worry about.
